So I have an Acer Laptop, an Acer Aspire V5-552G to be exact, and the screen is pretty much falling apart. Nothing wrong with the panel itself, but the metal frame around it and the plastic shell are both broken. I would like to order the genuine replacement parts for this computer as it is my main school computer, and I don't have another laptop to use right now. In the long run I am looking to replace it before 2018, probably to a nice Chromebook or cheap Windows laptop just for taking notes on for Uni, but right now what I need is this one fixed. So where would I go to order the replacement shell for the screen and the metal frame that goes around the LCD panel? Right now it's sorta held together by electrical tape but this definitely won't last.

Thanks,

Dove Electronics are Acer distributors and service agents but not sure if they will deal direct with the public.

I don't think so, I've had the laptop for around about 2 years now which is how long the Harvey Norman guy said it would last, it's out of warranty (we didn't buy extended warranty on it) and the broken shell could be from the daily use for two years, i don't know.

I'll have to ring them up and ask about it. Thanks

Acer do (or did, it's been a few years) have a service center in their offices in Auckland at Great South Road.

eBay will likely be your cheapest option.

It doesnt matter if the sales guy says it should last around 2 years, for what you paid for it and how you use it did you expect it to last longer? Is your expectation reasonable? if so then claim it under the consumer guarantees act.

in most cases an extended warranty is wasted money because you are covered by the consumer guarantees act anyway

Should expect at least 3 years from a modern laptop...... my mothers Compaq only just stopped working recently, and thats 8 years old.

Agreed, but this Laptop sounds like it goes to school in a bag everyday - I will assume it probably doesn't get the protection and treatment a normal laptop would get. I think Harvey Norman could have reasonable grounds to call it wear and tear over and above what would be considered reasonable in the CGA.

I could be wrong and the OP might have taken very good care of it and had it in a proper padded laptop bag, but I have seen what happens to Laptops that get taken to school every day. Not pretty most of the time...

A quick google brings up these guys. They only ship to the US so you'd have to get it redirected.

http://www.laptopking.com/searchmodelresults.asp?brand=acer&model=V5-552&txt=Aspire%20V5-552

Looks like it would be about $NZ75 for the part to be shipped to Youshop, plus probably $NZ20 for redirection as it's unlikely to be over 500g.

CGA laws : Acer have to supply parts for laptops they sell here .
Doesnt mean they will have every part in stock, parts may have to be shipped from overseas(by Acer) , that can sometimes be a long wait

You could try a specialist Notebook Repairer . Then can sometimes do the repair, parts & labor, cheaper than we can get the parts for , even with our trade pricing .

Just wondering, are the hinges OK, the hinges move freely ?
Sometimes the hinges get stiff & the plastic cracks & breaks around them.

The hinges seem to be quite stiff, like they push on the plastic shell of the screen when I open it. I'll try to get some photos of it, but it's not pretty, it's been held together for the last couple of weeks with electrical tape

I use a specific laptop bag to carry it in, and prior to owning that I did have a laptop sleeve that I got from Harvey Norman at the same time as the laptop for free. The laptop bag is branded HP and has a seperate padded pocket for the laptop to seperate the laptop from the charger/mouse/etc

I did look up these guys, but they no longer sell the back part of the shell for my laptop (I have the non-touch one)

Economically it would probably be cheaper to get a cheap used laptop.

Yeah I think at the moment that will be the plan, save up for a bit and buy a cheap laptop just for school (this laptop was about $1500 and was mostly for gaming, but now I have a desktop PC to play games on)
