For some reason or other i know someone with a Dell 640m 1.73 Core Duo Vista Home Premium that came with a 40gig hd.

Thanks to dell the first 10gig is the dell recovery partition. Bravo, the fastest part of the hard drive is filled with junk and he's left with mere peanuts of slow hard disk space towards row Z at Carisbrook.

My question is this: is there any reason why we can't just wipe out the 1st partitions and fill it up with Vista? It says the boot files are in the Vista partition, which, is also a primary partition. There are 2 primary partitions, no extended partitions.

Does Dell have any special requirements in its bios or otherwise that require this partition to be intact? Will Vista still work if i gparted it to conquer the small world after all?

Thanks. Of course we will backup but a failed partition project means lengthy reinstall! Thanks

Pop over to the notebookreview site and look in the Dell section. There's a bunch of help in there for various issues including rebuilding notebooks to remove Dell bloatware. There's a very useful thread on removing stuff here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=157838

Note that thread is specific to notebooks, but it cannot be too far from what your looking for.

Cheers Mike

well we've removed all the bloatware. now we need to know if it's safe to remove the front partition and that vista will still boot as we are not planning on a reinstall.

perhaps the mods would think this thread's better under "microsoft windows"?

Why not just wipe the lot and do a fresh install of Vista? Spend the extra hour and get the machine you want, not what Dell have set up. I did that with my Dell.

what a very good plan - if it were mine i would, but it's not and i do not have permission to knowingly perform a fresh reinstall. i guess i'll just tell him there is a possibility if we recover the space we could lose the whole plot. hmm ... we'll see what he says!

Never noticed the "i know someone with a Dell" part. A pity, as it's probably the best option. I suppose if I had just bought it new myself, I wouldn't be too keen on someone else mucking around with it, in case something went wrong. For my own stuff, I wait until the warranty runs out, and then do what I want to.

Thank god that HP allows me to remove my recovery partition.
I've only got 80 GB and it took up 8 GB, so it is pretty space consuming.

I think booting may still work if you remove it, but special features may not work if it depends on the partition.

everything's solved -

did a bit of researching regarding booting - there is a system partition and a boot partition.
since dell put both system and boot onto the vista partition everything's good.

deleted the recovery partition and recovered the space with no issues.
