I've just put my laptop in under insurance claim and be told I can get a replacement. They said it is like for like. The repairer came back with this option. But I don't think it is comparable to my old machine.

My machine.

HP ProBook 6550b 15.6

Core i5 450M

4 GB RAM

1TB GB

Super Multi DL DVD

Intel HD Graphics

Windows 7

Recommended machine

Asus X540UA-GQ806T 15.6”

Intel Core i3-7020U 2.3GHz Dual Core

4GB Memory

1TB Hard Drive

DVD Writer

Intel HD Graphics 620

Windows 10

As I discussed with repairer, they don't need to like for like a machine with a dvd drive/cd drive as I stream everything now to watch. And intel i3 and i5 are not the same. Also, I asked if it was possible I pay the difference for a machine with 8gb ram to run windows 10 - as a 4gb machine is not good enough for windows 10 imho and that I don't need a 1tb hdd and would prefer an ssd even if it is smaller - as storage not too much a issue as everything is in the cloud these days.

My problem is finding a machine with what I need that is similar like for like. And just wanted to know if anyone has recommendations.

I sent in a question to playtech earlier this week, as I used to always shop there but they seem to not respond these days, so not sure with is the best place to buy a computer from anymore. I will reach out to Computer lounge today.

I look forward to hearing peoples advice and experience as this is my first ever contents claim in 26 years.

You could ask for store credit instead of the laptop.

Usually an insurance company deals with a retailer (and they will get decent discounts from the retailer), so they may offer you store credit at that retailer to the amount they would have paid for the replacement.

Note, this will be less than the retail price of that laptop usually. With that store credit, you could then buy the one you want, topping up the balance.

BTW, I think their replacement offer is fair. You could try to go back stating you want a ProBook as they are a business machine - I think the Asus is a consumer machine.

Arguing "like for like" with such an old machine is always going to be difficult. Based off specs the machine they're offering you is vastly superior and faster in every aspect to your old machine.

Since you seem to want something quite different asking for a store credit may be the best option - but since you have a like for like policy that may not be an option, and is one of the issues where you have such a policy clause (it can work both ways).

Probook : Business class Laptop

Asus X540UA : Home class laptop

Its not like for like , tell them you want a business class laptop, with Win10 PRO and an i5 . Its at least worth asking
Whatever they offer up, make sure the RAM is upgradable to 8Gb+ . You can get the RAM upgraded later (talk to you ever is supplying it about upgrading it before pickup)

Given how old you Probook was, not sure if you want to push your luck :-)
