I've been chasing a niggling issue on a HP 4540S laptop. Every so often the battery is going flat and it is impossible to get the laptop to charge.

Initially I thought it was a problem with either the AC adapter plug or the laptop power socket. The problem seemed to be related to the way the adapter plug was positioned when inserted into the laptop socket, i.e. a faulty adapter plug or a faulty laptop socket.

Every time I check for power on the adapter plug there was the correct voltage present. In the end for about $6USD I bought and fitted a new power socket for the laptop. All went well for a week or so then the problem recurred. Some research indicated problems with the laptop power management could also be the the issue. I tried the fix for that but no luck.

I've been having another look today and whether or not power is delivered to the laptop sure seems to relate to how the adapter plug is positioned when it is inserted into the laptop power socket. This brings me back to my original diagnosis.

I'm happy to buy a new adapter but am reluctant to shell out the $125 only to find that's not the problem.

Does anyone on here have a HP Part No. 677777-003, or 693712-001, or 693713-001, 90W AC Adapter they could lend me to try? I'm in Hamilton so something nearby would be the ideal option.

Thanks for your help.

If you don't have any luck locally, give me a nudge.  I've got a couple of these floating around from laptops that have gone to the recyclers and can send one down from Auckland easily enough.

HP power packs of that era are one of just a few types, either the plug with a thin pin in the middle , or the usual socket .
Plenty on trademe if you need to buy, or

Try

remove the batt. then,
Start wiggling wires plugs & sockets to track down if its a connection issue

It could also be a power circuit issue inside the laptop.
Given its age, the batt would be on its last legs as well.

The most common issue we see with HP Laptops is resolved by removing the battery, power cable, and then holding down the power button for 20 seconds.

Laugh all you like. I have solved issues with laptops starting like this, literally 100+ times.

Thanks, will let you know I may have sourced one that will work.

Tried the wiggling right at the start, that's why I changed the socket on the laptop.

Tried a couple of fixes for the laptop power control circuits.

Battery was replaced a couple of years ago, not to say the battery couldn't be part of the problem.

Yep, did that a couple of times and thought it worked. Only the last time I tried that it didn't work but wiggling the plug in the socket seemed to do the trick so back to the connection as the cause of the problem.

I'm in Hamilton and have an elite book from the same era that should use the same adapter...

Flick me a PM if you want me to send through a photo of it
