I straddle the digital world, being Gen X. Computers did not really exist in my childhood (thank God) and didn’t really become everyday items until I was about 25.

Thus I tend to be quite analogue, preferring to take notes using a pen and paper. I tried using an iPad but the writing experience isn’t pleasant in my view. Fine for jotting a short note but not for anything longer.

Then I came across the Remarkable 2. It’s an e-ink tablet with one purpose: being a digital notebook. It is wifi enabled to save documents and download books etc but that’s it. No email. No browser. No apps. No notifications.

The surface you write on is textured and, combined with the stylus (which doesn’t require power) it feels and sounds much more like paper to write on. You can convert handwritten notes to text and email them as well. All the notebooks etc are backed up as you go to a cloud account.

It’s not cheap but if you want written notes, that feel like writing and drawing on paper, that are backed up and so on then it’s a fabulous speciality tool. Battery is long lasting, it’s thin, light and beautifully made.

I recommend it.

Is that the one that can also double as an eReader (such as a Kobo/Kindle)?

Yes it can, if you put the files in the correct format.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I've lusted after one of these for a while, but when compared to a $5 notepad every other month I just can't justify it.

I can see how you’d say that.

Of course, your $5 notepad isn’t backed up and is hard to share!

I’ve got an iPad Pro and this device beats it hands down for notes. The rest of what an iPad does I can do on my iPhone or my desktop. So to me it’s cheaper than a $1500 iPad and more useful.

There’s no doubt it’s a one trick pony but it’s a very competent one at what it does.

To be fair, most of my notes are for me only and I rarely look back at them other than at the end of the month to add up my hours on each project.

I use Google Notes as a to do list and Docs to store anything important.

I've always preferred to write on paper, this would be a gimmick more than anything.

Certainly looks nice ...

but can you back up / export your data to other systems / formats?

There are mobile and desktop apps. The desktop app (available for Windows and Mac) essentially looks like the actual device. You can export entire notebooks or individual pages from that as PDF documents.

You can also add PDF documents via the app to the device (which obviously will only display in greyscale on the device) and mark them up on the device with the stylus as if you had printed them and written on them with a pen.

So, depending on what you meant by other systems/formats, yes. You can save and share PDF's universally more or less now and you could of course back those up to anything like iCloud, Dropbox etc etc.

I've watched the ad videos etc but still can't work out how you write more than one page at a time...so if I was writing copious notes over a series of pages, I assume I'd just scroll, or swipe for a new page?

Can you highlight notes, etc?

You just swipe left and right to move from page to page. There is also a 'helicopter' type view where you can see thumbnails of each page in a notebook all at once on the screen. You can actually read the text on the thumbnails too, at least well enough to recognise which page is which.

Yes, there is a big selection of pen types - ballpoint, fineliner, marker, calligraphy pen, mechanical pencil, normal pencil etc and one of those is a highlighter so you can just scribble to highlight like you would with a real highlighter, although obviously it highlights in greyscale not colour. There are also 3 line thicknesses and you can choose between black or grey 'ink'.

Look up Morning Coach on You Tube - he has a lot of videos about the Remarkable and other instances of the same idea. He is a bit enthusiastic and American with copious references to "having fun" and "energy" but if you look past that there is a lot of footage showing how the devices work and what they can do.

Boox https://www.boox.com/ also makes a bunch of e-ink tablets (running flavours of Android). Benefit of the play store, albeit with perhaps too much customisation available for some ;)

Awesome thanks.

I use my iPad Pro for note taking and while it's good, I agree it's not the perfect solution - I have too many distractions from it and the idea of a Kindle-like eWriter sounds fantastic.
