Hey guys,

My girl friend wants to get a Mac Book laptop, budget under 1850. What one would you guys suggest??

The laptop is going to be used for,

word, excel, etc.etc,
internet,
ripping dvds / cds,
music phots etc. etc,

all pretty general stuff..

How is 1gb of ram on Mac? I am a windows person and 1gb on windows is very average....

also how do cpu speeds differ between macs and windows, I have heard that the same processor will run faster in a Mac???

Anyway thanks for any help :)

With a budget under 1850 you only have one choice,

White Plastic,2.1GHz
  • Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 1GB DDR2 Memory
  • 120GB hard drive1
  • Intel GMA X3100 graphics
will be Ok for general stuff, but the intergrated graphics is no good for anything involving 3D, but from the list of things on your list, it would be fine,

1GB is OK, 2 is always better, but buying RAM off apple is akin to selling your soul to the devil, best to buy it aftermarket, ( although you will have to junk to 2 1/2GB sticks that come with it if you want the full 2GB) prob cheaper to just replace 1 stick with afull GB and have 1.5GB

Thanks for the reply :)

What would be the next step up from the one you suggested. My girlfriend will probly have this laptop for 3 years so im just thinking about future proofing her investment (having a PC that will be able to keep up with new technology...)

Im guesing the laptop you suggested has two 512mb ram and the MOBO only has two ram slots

Thanks for your help
