Okay not everyone in the world likes "widescreen" laptops infact some syncical people might think widescreen laptops are popular on business laptops not for "watching a dvd" but really because a widescreen version is less pixels and therefore cheaper to make

So can anyone provide a website which identifies current model laptops by widescreen/non widescreen models? I can find plenty of sites that let you search for specific models by screen size but that always ends up 90% widescreen models.

Otherwise any recommendation for a laptop that isnt overly expensive around the 14" size and non-widescreen that comes with vista business or xp pro. 15" would be okay if it was small enough.

I haven't seen a new non WS laptop for quite some time.

What do you actually have against WS? I personally can't stand using 4:3 screens now, the extra screen space of 16:10 or 16:9 is so much nicer.

Actually this particular purchase isnt for me :) There is a few issues I've been made aware of:

screen realestate. The extra space is often wasted when looking at web pages they would prefer the extra height whilst keeping the laptop smaller allowing less scrolling and being able to see more on the screen.

Traytables on aeroplanes while flying apparently you used to be able to get a laptop + a drink onto the thing a bit harder with the widescreen variety (cant say I've experienced this one myself).

In our office a few programmers are fond of non widescreen laptops for similar reason as point 1) while programming (for desktops widescreens that allow you to rotate 90% are actually better.

Personally I'm a desktop user more than laptop and I still like the 4:3 screens but I certainly am not bothered as much.

for someone who spends a lot of time in programming code the widescreen is a must have! as for searching on non ws models, try using XGA and not WXGA in searches rather than 15", 14"etc

Yep already tried XGA/XGA+ and excluding WXGA but limited success. Regarding coding I agree when working on a single screen widescreen would be better as its always scrolling across that is the problem (particularly if editing directly say through putty) thank-goodness for high resolutions these days.

But not everyone sees it that way common scenario in our office is dual 2208WFP's flipped on their side.
