The HP should be the first in your list. Seriously well built machines and good performance.

By this time next week I should have received my new HP Mini 5101. Will have the following specs:

- 80GB SSD
- 2GB RAM
- Atom N280 CPU
- 10.1" 1366x768 screen
- Wireless a/b/g/n (draft)
- 3G WWAN
- 2MP camera
- Win XP Pro and Vista Business Licence (although will install Win7 no doubt)

Can hopefully let you know more about it next week. They're a nice machine though

and I think this may be the thing that finally tempts me to dip my toes in to the XT network (am a VF customer but the current iPhone 3GS 2100MHz chip/Vodafone network issue is becoming so much of a let down).

Will try out an XT SIM in the HP Mini 5101 and depending on results, it could very well end up the final catalyst for moving my handset over to XT also...

Screen size and resolution is one of the most important aspects IMHO.

For this reason a 8.9" is hopeless, the screen is simple too small to easily read things. I have an MSI Wind Plus myself which is a 10" screen with 1024x600. After using this for 6 weeks on holiday I also hate the lack of screen space and would recommend going for one of the newer machinesa round that have the 1280x768 or 1366x768 screens.

Forget any claims you see about batter life. 8-9 hours simply doesn't happen unless you turn everything off, turn the screen down to the lowest setting and don't touch the machine.

Unfortunately can't disclose what I paid for it - got it at a good discount with a partner supplier!

However can point you to 2 sites that I've seen it listed:

Here at Acquire for about $1370 excl GST and also here at Ascent for about $1360 excl GST.

Having said that, you can get cheaper configurations of this model without the SSD and without 3G etc (at both websites above also)

Asecent also have the Hewlett Packard Mini 2140 Netbook, Atom N270 1.6 GHz, 2GB RAM, 80GB SSD, 10.1" TFT, WLAN, Bluetooth, Win XP Pro, with Vista Business Downgrade Media.

Which is what I want although the N280 is a little faster. I like that this device had a 1gb Lan connection, most netbooks only have 100mb

Still I'm holding my $ until win7 is available for the netbook.

It doesn't have gigabit lan, that may not be important to you.

I have an MSI Wind U100 - $800 from Expert Infotech. GREAT little computer, never had any problems with it and it is nice and snappy.

Primarily run XP but I also multi-boot with Win 7 and OSX

I got a 1000he a couple of weeks ago and would recommend it. It does seem slightly over priced, but the keyboard alone is worth some extra $$$ the keys are spaced out and easy to press unlike other netbooks i have tried.

The battery life is a claimed 9.5 hours, in reality i get about 7hrs, which is still good in my books. Its also so very well made. I was undecided on SSD or HDD, but i wanted the capcity of a HDD and it doesn't seem to impace to much on battery live either.

Is it true that HP are going to offer a good price on a Mini for TechEd attendees? Anyone heard any rumours?
