We got burgled on friday. 3 laptops got taken. an acer aspire 5910 15.4 intel dual core wih 512 graphics about 18months old , an older dell 15 inch and a 5 year old acer 15inch. On the lookout for 2 new laptops . one for me to store my music (itunes) , movies, surf, a bit of video editing, and skyping  and a new one for my partner who does some flash and photoshop work as well as lot of trademe and facebooking.. I have a N wifi network at home so good connectivity is needed. I also used to have an issue with the acer not connecting to the wireless all the time but the dell worked great. The 512 graphics card on the acer actually sounded better than it performed.

I can get a 5% discount on Dell through work plus we have just been offered a mac deal as well (don't know the full details).
I don't know what i will get back from the insurance so probably looking to spend 3k max on 2 new laptops. Windows 7 upgrade will be good as well. The dell on xp always had less issued than the vista home premium acer.

I am a bit lost these days on the myriad of chipsets so any sugestions for chips, make and shops will be gratefully received.

I would avoid Dell like the plague. I had nothing but dramas with the Dell laptop I had.

Whatever brand you settle with, I highly recommend (at least) a three year warranty. Has saved me mega $$ a couple times.

Well, give us a budget for each laptop and we can go from there.

Like I said 3k for both so $1500 each or a couple of hundred either way for each. Just been to see the insurance company and don't hold out much hope of getting a great deal back
The also suggested I would have to go through their suppliers. Noel keening or hill and Stewart because they do deals with them got. Got my last. Computer from Noel keening but only after shopping around and price matching to get a good deal

I like the look of the Dell studio 15 inch it is 1699 but I can get 8 % off through work. Why are dells not flavour of the month. I though they did quite well in satisfaction surveys compared to the acers and hp's
