I've been giving an Asus U3S from a family member to fix, previous owner removed the hard-drive (which I've replaced) and has forgotten the bios password (oh joy).

I've tried reflashing the BIOS, running various utilities, disconnecting the small battery on the motherboard - all have not worked.

Any other ideas as to what else to try to remove the password?

How long did you leave the CMOS battery out for? Sometimes leaving it out for a while makes a difference. Can take a while to discharge all the juice. Maybe hit the power button while it's still in pieces with no batteries connected. Drain the life out of it!

You are probably out of luck but if it is an Award BIOS then the backdoor password is AWARD_SW . I was amazed a couple of weeks ago on a very recent motherboard with an Award BIOS this password still worked as I remember using the password 15+ years ago on much older motherboards.

Thanks

As far as I'm aware, the passwords are permanently stored, and unique. You'll need to contact ASUS. They should be able to provide a master password after proving ownership and giving them the serial number. Another option is purchasing a new BIOS chip for the laptop. Not sure what's involved in installation but I don't think it requires soldering.

That'll be alittle tricky since it was purchased off TradeMe.  Amazing how one simple issue can cause so much grief.
