I'm trying to help a family member come up wiith a solution. They currently have a desktop PC at the main residence and are wanting a laptop/netbook or simlar at a holiday home. Ideally they would be a mirror of each other or in "synch", and thus avoiding transporting computers from one location to the other. I imagine email will be realtively simple to get working but I'm not sure about music/photos/data files etc.
Any suggstions are welcome.
I think it will probaly be simpler if we replace the desktop with a laptop that is taken from on location to the other. And then possibly turn the desktop into a server to run backups on the laptop plus another laptop on the network.

Are these computers going to be in the same LAN at some stage? Keep things in sync at distance means broadband usage - the first sync operation should be at least locally if the volume is large.

There are services such as Dropbox for that, or if you need more than one folder you could have a VPN (such as LogMeIn Hamachi) and use Microsoft Synctoy (which I use).

Hmm yes i am thinking of doing something similar myself.

An external hard drive is a obvious easy answer to store files

or maybe a cloud based storage system?

Yeah they could be on the same LAN initially, I'll have to look at those options suggested. I'm not sure how well it would work with things like picassa and itunes though.

Can give Microsoft live mesh a go too. free through microsoft live essentials. Works pretty well and will store online automatically if needed with free 20GB. You may not be able to install on XP though.
