Computers seem to have a much longer shelf life these days.

One of our PC's is a 6year old core 2 duo. Recently upgraded the Ram to 4GB and upgraded it from Windows XP to Windows 8. Can't say its slow but then its not used for gaming.

My "new" PC is in my sign below.... had it for about 6 months, made from old parts at work etc. Before that, was on a P4 3.0 for a while.

Im a part time gamer and so far this PC has done me well, but Im not trying to play the latest stuff, Im happy with CS:S, CoH and Minecraft :)

I "upgraded" my parents from a P4 2.4 to my old P3 3.0 and theyre happy with it, it does what they want.

I think my old Compaq EVO's are about 7 years old, they should be dead sometimes soon as the capacitors are only good for about 5 years then they start doing some weird things. However, they don't get cycled (turned off cool down then on and heat up), they pretty much stay on 24/7.

They're old P4 2.8GHz machines 512RAM, plenty to run Linux with radio automation on one and do audio multi-tracking on the Windows one. I need to upgrade to 64-bit soon as I'm running out of software in my industry to run on 32-bit.

But they do the job, so I haven't upgraded in about 7 years. I like these little desktops because they are very quiet, extremely important for what I use them with. First thing I do with a machine is increase the sink, put a bigger fan in and drop them with 5 watt resistors so they run nice and quiet, but these old EVO's are quiet enough.

The only dual core I own is a small AMD netbook with HD intergrated chipset. I used it for about a month until I got an iPod, it's been collecting dust for 8+months now.
