MadEngineer: what's it like with the battery removed (running off mains only), and how long does the battery keep its charge?

when it's warm and fails to boot, does it magically POST (with the no boot device error) when you remove that failing harddrive?

No error, just powers off. Tried a spare HDD with the same result.

You should find that 6710b a reliable machine.  If you can fix the fault, get yourself a new hdd, battery and a ram upgrade and you'll be away laughing.

The poor Laptop has has about 4 new HDDs, upgraded to 4Gb Ram, upgraded wifi to n. It has done well.

I have a nice new one now. 17.3" screen on a laptop is brilliant :)

I'll still see if I can bring it back to life

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.
