I just priced up an HP at HP direct and it came to $1500 USD. Only upspec from the Asus UX302lg was the screen res. Almost not worth the hassle.

nope on the US HP website - not the NZ one they want to redirect you to - i5 8MB 127MB $1049

Here is the same spec as the ASUS UX302LG (with exception of the hard drive / solid state combo) which comes to $1640 NZD. If GST is charged into NZ it is $1885 so there is around a $300 saving over the ASUS at around $2200.

Oh I see what you mean- I've looked at i7's but I don't need the processing power- I use a lot of programs simulatenously - I'm not editing video - or gaming - aso I can live with the lower spec

I looked at the UX301 - the i5 version - but it's about $300US more than the spectre for the same spec

Yeah. There is a huge price jump from the UX302 to the UX301. Not really sure why. I am keen on the i7. Might just get a UX302 here if the price is right, they only seem to have the lower spec UX302's in the US currently.

Still $500 more than the US price inc GST excluding shipping. I've also heard mixed reports about the ultra-high res screen on that model - apparently a lot of Win 8 apps can't deal with it very well and you get crazy small fonts

I have seen the mixed reports too. Hopefully it gets sorted. It really needs to be addressed by MS but that is another issue....

Agreed.

TBH my eyes are pretty average - I think their standard HD (which is still a good screen) will be more than enough for me. I'm also not clear whether local HP machines come with the free copy of Adobe Lightroom 5 - which they ship with in the US (retail over NZ$200 here)

Do not buy ultra high deff screen laptop. Unusable on certain programs. Fine with the rest. Not worth the hassle

I got to look at the Lenovo X1 Carbon 2014 with the QHD Screen today. I am pretty impressed though the "balance" feel is slightly rear heavy meaning it doesn't feel quite right and feels heavier than it's 1.3KG. The screen is stunning, the keyboard is perhaps the best I've ever used on any mobile device. The touchpad is odd as the whole thing is a giant button but I'd get used to it. It feels very solid and well built though I am not sure about the keyboard layout or the physical lack of function keys (adaptive instead).

I am seriously considering this to replace my 4 year old Sony Z Series, and I really wanted a 14/15" screen WQHD with weight under 1.5KG, but pickings are very thin, infact I am pretty certain the X1 is the only 14" that meets the criteria. It's eye wateringly expensive in my chosen config at about $3200 + GST.

I *really* like the HP 13" except for the glossy screen which is impossible to see in sunlight, it feels better, and has the same high res screen I crave.

I have seen some apps not scale nicely but it's not that big of deal.
