Wow. I'm pleasantly surprised at the bang-for-buck you get these days in the x86 space (excluding Apple).

I would spend $1200 max.

If i were to spend $1200 max the dell xps 12 is $1280, are there any other ultrabooks i can have a look at around that price?

make sure you check the weight. anything 1.3kg is good. anything more than 1.5kg is not so portable. of course also check the processor and the battery life. I recommend i5

if I were you I'd seriously get the XPS 13 i5 for $1600 it is 1.3kg (less than the XPS 12 at 1.5kg) and more screen space and seriously sleek.

10.6" on Surface is big if it's sitting close towards you. Remember it's not a full size keyboard blocking you from bring your 14" or larger ultrabook/laptop closer. People are using tablets like Surface and iPad's as their everyday machine now.

My macbook air 13 inch can handle everything I do. Word processing, mine craft, streaming all that stuff.

mac vs pc is personal preference. it's like driving stick or auto transmission. pros and cons - do you want to do burnouts or not?

I was thinking of a mac too but how is the PowerPoint /Microsoft word equivalent for macs? Some problems might be some software I use for biomed only have a windows version and not mac. Is the mac book air specs good enough to dual boot windows?

Yes it is powerful enough but 128gb barely enough to single boot let alone dual boot.

You can't store system files on a portable hard drive. Only media and personal files. So it'st up to you. Or buy a bigger hard drive.

The Dell XPS 12 is on a good special (20% off). The price is not going to last long. Get the i3 version and you can always upgrade the 80GB SSD inside it later when you have more $$$. Below is an video that shows how to do it.
