After going through this on a big batch of HP laptops at work. Even an SSHD is great. from 1TB 5400rpm to 1tb sshd 5400 rpm and 8gb cache, the difference is night and day.
Comparing the sshd to the ssd's in our desktops is surprisingly close too. Great boot speeds, fast opening and very smooth. Dont have any similar hardware with a 7200 rpm boot drive to compare to though. If your choice is a pure spinning disk or an sshd for a handful of dollars more, I would grab the sshd any day.

looking at your situation though, it is going to come down to how many files you are looking at/working with at one time. more than a couple of GB is probably going to push stuff out of the cache and make random reads/writes slower.
That said, something like that is not too expensive compared to a conventional drive to try out and see if it works:

US250 500GB SSD vs Spinning

smallest difference of 6 times for perfectly aligned large files.
biggest difference of 211 times for poorly aligned very small bits of files.
