Yeah looks like I can change the name of the program to something like "Toshiba Touchpad Driver" and swap the word "support host connected" to something like "touchpad enabled"

The program will also let us run commands on the computer remotley and our server notes the public ip address of where the client is connecting from.

Hi Ray!

Sounds awesome, but according to my my Teamviewer account, my computer hasn't come online for 9 days. I am assuming the battery has run dry and nobody has bothered with a charger for it yet. Worst case, it has been formatted and re-purposed, but somehow I doubt it. It would not be worth anything without the charger.

I will keep you posted! I may still be able to take you up on your offer!

Plot twist...

We've just had an intruder up our driveway who was arrested about 30 minutes later by police. We noticed him as he was on his way up thinking it was a friend of the landlords who narrowly missed us at speed. We have a 950M metal driveway and he was flying like a cut cat all the way up! We called to check and she sent a text back saying she called the police. I raced home and locked the gate, barricading him in with the gate and my car further down. Police arrived within 5 minutes and made an arrest after being unhappy with the BS answers he was giving them.

I've made them aware about the laptops and personal information which may have lead them to my address. The whole family is on high alert until further notice, needless to say.

Fingers crossed they arrested the guy connected with the robberies. He seemed to fit the description from the cameras too, but I'm more than happy to believe it's my brain making silly connections to unconnected events. However, it's the first time someone has had the balls to travel all the way up our drive for no reason. It's the kind of driveway that guests arriving tell us how they were second guessing if they were on the right track.

We will see.

In the future, both drop box and facebook record IP addresses when they log in (if its different from before). Pretty good way to catch someone If you laptop has no password and your services are logged in

I had at the time deliberately left Facebook logged in with the password unchanged in order to catch them if they ever tried visiting Facebook. No luck I'm afraid.

Seems as if my options have run out. The police have arrested the thief and is appearing in court today. I've filled out an official statement, impact report and reparation schedule. I went to town on the impact report. I doubt I will get anything out of him though.

The laptop has remained offline for 20 days. According to the thief he had on-sold it to someone already, which means the person he flicked it off to either formated it and is using it, or it is still totally out of battery and in storage somewhere.

I have his first and last name with a possible Facebook account of his daughter. He does not seem to have one. He is in his 50's after all. Or is he? There is a bit of a theory circulating the workplace that the father of the thief that stole the laptops took the fall with the police to prevent any wrongdoing being pinned on his son. The person in the footage we have seems a whole lot younger than 50.

I have a first and last name. What's a Private Investigator worth? Haha.

The local drug dealer will have it 10000%, or the drug dealer would have flicked it off to one of his mates on the cheap

So what are people using to be a bit more proactive should their laptop go missing? I have a Lenovo x200 which has built in GPS and a sim slot. Wondering what options there are to make use of these functions.

I don't think between Vodafone/2degrees/telecom that there's a super cheap prepaid plan where unused data never expires? Would hate to rely on sticking a SIM card in it and relying on the chance of deactivating it should I need it.

I would suggest setting up a gmail account, and getting a program that emails the gps position back to the gmail account every hour or something like that.

One thing to be aware of though - as a person in the hacking community gave a demo for recently i saw on youtube, he made a good point. Putting a password on your computer and securing it will make it harder for the thief to use it and therefore harder for you to track. So one piece of advice i can give you is if you want to put a password on your computer, set up a second account as a normal standard user for the thief to use.
