I Have to say I enjoy my Macbook, it has no plasticy bits that will brake off(magnetic latch) and a slot loading drive, build quality in my opinion is great but I haven't exactly used alot of other notebooks. support is great if you know where to go.

A Macbook with 2GB of ram and a large harddrive will be fantastic, it can run OSX and Vista fast and well.

Thanks y'all for your replies.....I would appreciate more info. I'm tempted to go for mac but if I decide to I'll buy it from Australia as I will be there next year. Unfortunately Malta has pretty high prices, suffice to say that it'll be much cheaper to buy it elsewhere. But this is still to be decided.

Seriously though, what's the go with Acer? I was looking at this deal - would it be worth it or am I opening myself up for a world of hurt? And how easy is it to ditch Vista and load XP?

I have a cheap little Acer and it has been great. Decided solely on price and portability (14.1" screen). It is not the lightest or fastest in the world but has been great for watching the odd movie in a hotel room, word processing and email. It was also the only one around with a 6 cell battery at the time for the price which meant more battery life. Cheers!

Acer is fine. I've brought a few, and they're fine. My first ever Acer laptop was absolute rubbish (years ago), but, they seem to have sorted themselves out in recent years.

Having said that, I'd go for a Dell. Unbeatable price, generally good build quality, lousy after-sales service though, and the biggest seller - you get to choose to Windows XP as the OS.
You can get Win XP with other manufacturers, but, not with the entry/consumer level models (i.e. not at DSE, Noel Leeming/B&B, Harvey Norman).

We're hitting the 3GB-4GB limit now with 32-bit XP & Vista (I remember when 640KB was a big deal!), so the only real advantage I can see with Vista would be the 64-bit version. However, there are a few - not too small - hurdles which need to be overcome. 64-bit migration and subsequent mainstream acceptance at the consumer end will take some time (years).

Just got a new laptop bag from Dell after I emailed them that the old one (1 year and counting) was fraying at the strap. Indeed I even asked if the bag itself was even covered: apparently so! The only question asked of me was which day and address I wanted it sent to. Modest only grasp of English at Dell support: my only gripe. Got new bag on requested date (with Dell-supplied stuff to send old one back). All done within a week.

drakge: How would you rate ... apple, vaio, acer, toshiba, dell, and hp(and any other brand you can think of)??? Which is the best to own....ignoring prices...??

I have at one stage of my life owned a computer from all of the above brands and would rate them in order below.

1.Toshiba (good all round performance)
2.Alienware (great looking and perfoming gaming computers, not many models available in NZ though)
3.HP (good value and performance)
4.Dell (good value, performance & looks)
5.Sony (good performance & stunning looks, slighty overpriced for the spec but good quality)
6.Apple (I do not use apple for personal or business use, just got one for testing purposes, they hardly ever crash and I never got a virus ever, I guess those who write viruses dont aim at apples anyway, only about 5% of the PC market)
7.Acer (never owned an Acer so can't really comment)
