Jase2985: is a laptop with a Quadro card going to be better than one with a 960/980 for this sort of stuff? as there are a few profession CAD laptops out there with the quadro graphics cards

In most cases - yes.

Hi Jase,

I had read the first link and that is the one I were basing my requirements on and also what we are currently using. I hadn't seen the second link though, which was real handy as I had heard that you could use a Surface 3, which surprised me based on the requirements listed by Artec. I do a lot of RTF scans which the Surface doesn't support.

We have tried PCs with Quadro cards but they don't work that well and Artec doesn't recommend them, even though they have users that use them.

The Dell Precision M6800 looks promising apart from the Quadro card, but maybe the 32 gig of RAM it compensates for Quadro deficiencies and also our IT people normally only let us buy Dells.

A  strong reason to buy  a  Quadro card is if you plan to use Stereo mode in Artec Studio

if you use sterio mode get a laptop with a quadro card if not get a NVIDIA GTX based card

Great GTX based laptop

you can get variations on that with more SSD space

about the best you can get with out going SLI and artec dont support that

How about Alienware? They're part of Dell, so that should keep the IT guys happy, and their 17inch range is specced appropriately. This one has 16GB RAM onboard, a 3GB GeForce graphics card, plus a 128GB SSD boot drive plus a 1TB SATA drive for storage.

not much better than he currently has + i dont think you can go to 32gb of ram + they are more expensive for the same items than other brands

It doesn't have USB2

USB 3 ports are backwards compatible though, aren't they?

Asus' ROG G751 available at PB Tech has 32GB and a 4GB Nvidia graphics card. Clocks in at over $4k though.

USB3 is backwards compatible

ie you can use a USB2 device in a USB3 port and it should work fine as its designed to use older devices in it

About 3 months ago I bought an Asus G751J laptop. Evidently it is the model that gamers use because of it good graphic card. It has " Republic of Gamers" printed on the cover.

I am sure that is was standard at 16 GB of ram but was upgraded to 32GB using 2 x 8gb by the shop I bought it from. On top of the laptop price they charged an extra $394 plus gst for the extra 16gb of ram.

Also I go it spec'd with 256GB SSD and 1 TB hard drive. Start up time to go is only a few seconds.

The Nvidia GEFORCE gtx  card I understand is 8gb DDR 3L-1600.

I got this machine for video editing using Pinicle and it flies through all the processing with no problems. Very quick on the rendering as well.

It is reasonably new model just released in Feb in NZ.

Slightly more outlandish suggestion, but given the limitations of the notebook form factor, have you looked at a "portable" desktop option. I'm thinking something micro-ATX based or perhaps even the new Mac Pro (though from memory the Mac Pro uses AMD graphics cards by default). You could then use an existing (basic) notebook (or perhaps even a tablet) to "remote" into the PC to start the scan.

Given you're lugging scanners around too, I'm guessing your not worried about putting it in a satchel and jumping on a bus.
