Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

muppet: I want to get a new laptop.

Why the hell is a MacBook Air cheaper than a similar specd Windows machine?

I want:

13"
SSD
8G RAM

Don't care much about the processor, long as it's not a potato.

Air is $1499

Just a small point - with the specs you want, you're not going to get a MacBook Air for $1499, unless you found somewhere that's running a discount...

Oh and on a more general note, can people PLEASE learn the rules about apostrophe use? If you're referring to the PLURAL (i.e. more than one) of something then DON'T USE AN APOSTROPHE!

JoshWright:
muppet: gehenna: Giving money to Apple is different to giving money to Acer/ASUS because I hate Apple with the power of 10,000 suns, while I do not hate ASUS or Acer with the power of any suns.

Trying to convince me otherwise just causes the number of sun-hatreds to increase, so please don't waste time trying :)

You seem extremely close minded.

People are entitled to hate specific companies for what they are or have been for any reason they so chose.

I also would not buy any apple product ever and that is because of my own personal opinion of apple as a company as well as a long list of dislikes relating to their products.

Interesting comment re price of the dell.  Had an XPS back in the day, it was awesome!  Stayed away from another because of price, but with that knowledge, may just get another :D

^ I think OP and responses are somewhat a set up for trolling. I mentioned consumer sovereignty is ultimately your decision on what (or who) you spend your money on

No, it was an honest question, not trying to troll. I was genuinely surprised when I went looking to see that an Apple Air is cheaper than a XPS13 with similar specs.  Turns out I was wrong to a degree though, to get 8Gb Memory in your Air you do need to pay nearly the same price as a XPS 13.  And if the comment above about asking for and getting a $300 discount is true, then the Dell is actually the cheaper deal.

Thanks everyone who's replied thus far anyway, I've learnt quite a bit and seen some good options.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

muppet: Interesting idea, but a really want a laptop with a keyboard etc. I know the Surface can have a clippy one, but I don't even want Touch screen etc.

But thanks, worth considering if I get desperate.

I went through this exact same thing a year or so ago. I couldn't find anything that didn't have a touch screen that had the specs I wanted. I never use the touch screen, other than when I'm trying to clean the screen and do something by accident. I'm not really sure why manufacturers are shoehorning touch screens into traditional form factor laptops. No matter how stiff the hinge, you always end up with some wobble when you touch it. IMHO they only really work on convertibles, where you can brace the screen when using in touch screen mode.

On the rare occasions I let the kids play with it though they love the touch screen though.

I ended up with a Sony Vaio Pro - and it is awesome. Unfortunately you can't get them any more. That said, it's not the nicest keyboard I've ever used (as an aside, the new MacBook keyboard is awful. The key travel is like 0.5 mm).
