SheriffNZ: Thanks for all the comments guys. I've elected to simply go for the Microsoft version. With my usage that should be sufficient. When I upgrade my laptop or start using it more, I'll invest in a better solution.

SCUWP - my laptop is capable of being upgraded to Windows 10, however I don't have enough free disk space.

In that case, freed up the space and upgrade to windoes 10.

Problem solved.

One thing to Watch with Norton, and im not sure if they still do this
If you paid by credit card, they used auto renew the AV every year & charge your CC. So make sure
norton wont autorenew

My experience (being a **** AV reseller), is that none are 100% . Ive seen malware get past all
of them, in fact Ive seen *****(famous brand) not detect a cryto virus utill the PCwas infected: ie it didnt prevent infection at all, but could detect it AFTER infection :-(

I use Avast at home, I does a good enough job.
I dont however , like the way Avast tricks(yes) many non PC savvy users into paying for the full version.

I'm not sure what I can get rid of to free up the space. And, given my usage, I'm not willing to invest the time. I am looking forward to trying Win 10 when I do get a new computer.

It was the autorenewal reminder that prompted my question. I've already updated my subscription so it doesn't deduct the funds from my credit card. Cheers

From what I've read Avast is the best free antivirus. It has a lot of nag reminders trying to upsell but I've trained my family to ignore them.

MS Security Essentials is good but not the best.

Years ago AVAST was my go to free AV but I found that my clients got confused every year when it needed to be renewed - does this still happen?

Yep, big time, often. I still have the same issue with my clients
They trick (yes trick) non savvy users into paying for the full version.
I still use it at home, but its getting alot worse with all the popups for product addons I dont want nor ever enabled (that just get installed & turned on without warning)
Its turning into a pig of a product, unfortunately .

But whats the free alternative, apart from MSSE ?
Other free products are either worthless (bad detection rates), or wont scan email, or are just bloatware, or some Chinese company that possibly cant be trusted (possibly)

I dont get any hassles from Avast at all, and Ive been running it for a couple of years now...... just registered as a basic user (free) and thats it.
