jonb: You would need to clone the existing hdd with Windows install on it, to the Ssd. It should come with a program to do that, but needs the laptop to be running to do that. So run first with existing hdd that comes with it.

Also Create recovery media on a separate 8GB usb stick, so you can recover the system if anything goes wrong and need to re-install Windows.

Just be careful though, as the Windows System Image Backup tool will not work if the first drive is 2TB and the replacement drive is 500GB. With System Image backup requires the same or larger replacement disk size (regardless of how full the drive is).

Ehhh sounds too risky for me as a computer novice.

Think I'll just leave it for now, don't want to screw everything up. Maybe in a few months once I have gotten used to the new Laptop I will look into installing a SSD.

Buy SSD.
Buy usb 3 enclosure.

Put SSD into enclosure. Plug enclosure into usb port.

Download macrium free.
Clone hard drive into SSD.

Use screwdriver. Open laptop. Swap hdd for SSD.

Done.

What about the above posters who were mentioning I would need a flash drive and also the replacement drive would have to be the same size/bigger than the one being taken out?

Macrium Reflect can create a boot USB drive, better to run it from that than from within windows. It's very easy to do. So long as you have less data to copy than the size of the disk it's fine. This is why I don't keep data on my OS disk, plus you can run tools like windows "disk clean", disable hibernation (pretty sure Macrium doesn't copy them anyway), delete internet history, delete temp files (disk clean doesn't get them all), and a HUGE one is to turn windows restore down to use 1% of your drive space - turning it off doesn't delete restore points.

I've never done it any other way. I've done about 20 of these swaps. Just cause i like to "flash" my play laptops

Ok. Since this is a very new laptop and it has Windows 8.1. Use it for the time being, upgrade to Windows 10 FIRST - so your Windows 10 license is activated and stored in cloud.

Then in few months time, do a fresh install of Windows 10 when you are ready to install SSD - pretty sure that will be fine and your system will be activated automatically with Windows 10 license.
