Asus Zenbooks fit well into that range:

Yep, I too would recommend an Asus Zenbook .. My experience has been that they're well built and I've been getting awesome battery performance

I've been using a Skylake (2015) Dell XPS 13 for the past several months and I have to say it is the best laptop I've ever owned.

The one I have is the 1080p, i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB model. The battery life is fantastic the touchpad is super responsive and the keyboard is comfortable to use.

The new Kaby lake version is on sale (ends today) on dells website for $1,784 with improvements like hardware 4k decoding, better battery life etc.

One of the things I really like about the design of the XPS 13 too is the soft-touch finish on the carbon fibre around the keyboard/touchpad.

That being said, there's a full spec XPS15 at the outlet store for $2199 with minor cosmetic wear.

When are we going to see powerhouse Kaby Lake chips? That combined with the desktop 1060 = a new era of mobile computing!

Just want to have a recommendation too please.

I was looking at a 13" laptop but would go to 15'. Light in weight is good. I want a fast computer (mine is so slow!) I stream a lot of movies. Not a gamer. Often have multiple pages open. Not too worried about memory as I use seperste hard drives/storage.

Have looked at the Dell XPS mentioned above but was not overly happy with my last XPS. I was hoping for something nearer $1500. Does seem like a good deal though.

I want a touch screen, backlit keyboard.

Any advice appreciated, thank you.

I know nothing :-)

XPS 13" I bought in 2011/2012 I think. The battery had to be replaced before 12 months. The screen hinges broke (I am very careful and no children) and a new screen had to be fitted.

That was pretty junk. The laptop linked costs $4000+ retail (it's as premium as premium gets, we call it the macbook slayer) and you are getting it for half price and it won't give you the problems you described with the 1st gen XPS 13

No I own lots of Dells, the XPS 15 is the ultimate if you can lug 2kg, otherwise the XPS 13 is the bomb (just 1.2kg). very very quick. pretty sure they have money back guarantee if you're not happy.

Thanks guys.

Still don't know how which one to get. Kind of narrowed it down a bit, Dell XPS or HP Spectre are the two at the top of my list, however really not bothered and Im waiting for sales.

If you can get over the fact they have been used for possibly upto a year or so by the business owners. On the other hand they have lasted that long and have a full year warranty from your purchase date.

Thanks guys. Not really after 2nd hand. I like to buy all my electronics Brand New. Still haven't decided what I want. There's lots of options, all have basically the same specs give or take in each Price bracket.

I'm just going to wait until Boxing Day/New Year sales and see if there's anything for a good price then.
