That HP machine is not worth the money they ask for them at all.
I'd import a Sager if you can or just go buy something like I have.

Only thing about the Sabre I don't like, Touchpad and the screen sits on the keyboard when closed and leaves a mar in the middle which is a scratch...

Why do you say that? There are very few art oriented convertibles outside the MS Surface Book 2 with a dGPU. Most reviewers are liking this notebook. quad core, 16GB ram, 512GB NVME, 4k touch screen, mx150 with windows ink. Those are not specs available in any other 2n1. Art and photo oriented machines need a dGPU, LR photos processing increase by 2.5x, 4k video by 4x (thats the mx150). its not a gaming machine and i dont intend it to be. in saying that CODww2 players quite nicely on it and clearly processor dependant games like Civ do really well with the quad core.

why would you buy a Sabre? ive had a gigabyte before. but the sabre is a gaming oriented machine. the 7700hq is up with the newer 8th gen quad cores so thats ok, but if the rest of it doesnt fit my needs.

the specs just arent up there for me. If you are a gamer perhaps, but I have gaming machines, so ive decided against updating them.

the spectre has long battery life, lots of power, extremely quick nvme and ram, its thin and light, most importantly its a 4k touch that is 2 in 1 that is very useful for light room and photoshop.

I would seriously consider the xiaomi notebook pro 15.6
8th gen i5 mx150 GPU 8gb ram nvme SSD all for 1.1k nzd

Short answer - yes. As other have noted, if it's shipped here and over $400NZ (incl shipping), you will likely get pinged for GST and other fees.

You could always go for a holiday in Hawaii and bring it back with you, unboxed and used in your backpack. They are unlikely to charge fees then, and the cost differential would more or less pay for the air fares to take the holiday.

I think you might be confusing the value of goods vs the amount of duty/GST to be collected.

My understanding is that for goods where no duty is applied, $400 is the value of goods that hits the de minimis of $60 of GST.
If duty is applicable, for example, clothing, then the total value of the goods will be a lot less as the combined duty and GST make up that $60 will be reached at lower values of goods.

yeah ive looked at the Xiaomi. is that the price after GST and stamp duty?

its not quite the level of power or purpose i want but its not a bad machine.

the acer a5 is gen 8 i7, the rest is the same specs as xiaomi, thats $999 from computer lounge.

the reason I want the spectre x360 is for the type of machine it is, despite it also being maxed out, i mean 512GB nvme alone is not cheap nor is 16GB notebook ram (from a manufacturer), 4k screen and the type of screen is important, behind the MS Surface Book 2, its one of the best for drawing, photoshop, lightroom etc with the a quality pen.

it works out about $2500 landed. the ms SB 2 is about $3200, but i has a gtx1050 and a better quality panel (being 3:2 i also prefer it for photography). but you can only buy whats available and NZ does get shafted.

How do you mean by this? That Sabre 15 will out perform that Hp in every way apart from SSD size and screen resolution..

In functionality, my use case is not for a gaming notebook, or notebook at all. As I said its for the best Art 2n1 I can afford. These tend to focus on screen touch sensitivity, screen quality, fast nvme drives, ram, quad core, small gpus that dont drain battery, long battery life, thin and light.

The two are chalk and cheese. Not saying Gigabyte is bad, its a desktop replacement though, a gaming machine.

Yeah I know what I need, we just dont get the options down under unfortunately. I could go the FHD 12GB model and save $500, but working with photos you really want at least 1920x1200. Hence the SurfaceBook being soooooo good for this.

But that spectre model from the US is a 4k model which would work nicely.

Im just wondering how I can import it as Amazon dont often export notebooks. Ive never used the NZ post my US address thing.

IMHO. All up, the price difference has to be at least 20% for you to take the risk of not having local warranty and GCA protection (especially on high value item).

I surprise myself how frequently I have to claim warranty on electronic stuff such as motherboard, memory and SSD, cellphone, tablet ..etc which fails within 1 year.

Ive never been able to claim a warranty. But if Apple extended theirs by 1 month id have claimed over 50 warranties :-)

I might just build a new PC and get and older Surface Pro for my Photography. Although Surface Book 1s sell for about $1k used now, hmmmm.

Whilst the spectre is Best of the Best (price taken into account) BOB as Lisa from MobileTechReview calls it, its still close enough to surface book pricing having to import. The 13" has no dgpu and thats not good enough.

After visiting your cousin you bring it back in person like it's your own laptop, in a bag, no box, no manuals. Like how you would take your NZ laptop overseas.

In the past I have spoken to NZ Custom on the phone and they said, even if you got a birthday present in the post with a birthday card tax will still be applied where applicable.

Or are you meaning you don't want to pay local GST in Australia? I wouldn't use the term stung, cos that is the law, it's not like no one else are paying that and only you are. Maybe look up duty free shopping in Australia and see which stores supports that. I know in NZ cameras can do that like Photo Warehouse, but prob not all shops and I haven't heard about any computer stores in NZ that offer duty free shopping.

You have 60 days to present the goods on departure with receipts and they will refund the GST, there is no mention that the goods much be in an un-opened state, so it should be all good to use for a month of so....

Dunno which Australian store do DFS. But you may need the correct paperwork and they allow tax refunds within 60 days of you leaving the country.

Yes, I just saw it. Thing is maybe Australia is different but which stores support DFS?

The receipt does need the ABN number which is different to the tax number. It also says you need to depart Australia with the laptop with you ....

As you leave the country, you must wear or carry the goods as hand luggage with you, unless the goods are oversized goods or liquids, aerosols and gels restricted to hold luggage for security reasons.

If you are buying a nice laptop ie $1000AU you need the receipt to show your passport number as well...

In addition, tax invoices for sales of $1000 or more must include the buyer's identity, for example their name or passport number.
