only one advice. get a laptop with SSD.

They do have an iPad but also want a Laptop for '"other" reasons also. I think an iPad is sufficient. But I do as I'm asked.
It's taken many years but I now steer as far clear of family tech stuff as possible. Makes for a far less stressful relationship. I wish you luck on your journey to family tech support independence :)

Not sure if @Shapenz has any more but could be worth asking. I just bought one for my parents and to be honest it exceeded my expectations - will be perfect for them.
