Userbenchmark isn't very liable as it tends to overrate intel CPUs heavily - though I guess it doesn't matter as much comparing two AMD CPUs to each other
DeepBlueSky: I picked up a Dell Latitude 7390 2 in 1 13inch for $650 for my Daughter for next year at school, new in 2019 and warrenty though to 2022.
I was very lucky but I always look at the latitude series lots available ex lease and they a re build like tanks aimed at the business sector ruggard Mil spec both my Dell's are magnesium alloy chassis and the 2 in 1 has a Gorrila glass touch screen plus Carbon Fibre construction .
Have a look on TradeMe or through Laptop resellers who Deal with Business technology refreshes.
@DeepBlueSky: are you able to share where you found your daughter’s laptops, and what other resellers you’d recommend keeping an eye on (even if via DM)? Thanks heaps.

Hi jonathan18, the 2-in-1 7390 was off TradeMe just spotted it in a random search and didn't waste time purchasing it as I said very lucky though it its good to know what you looking for though makes searching easier.
Dell have (had) a site for these but its not operational in NZ at this time https://www.dell.com/en-nz/outlet This was a great site as you would also get warrenty.
Personally if I was going to get a laptop with the needs you looking for; look at the Christmas sales they are all offering crazy payment periods that makes it easier to manage. As they are domestic quality and we are talking about Kids and school I would in this case look at one of those Damage Protection Warrenties that some stores are offering.
Sorry I dont have a secret back door into resellers. If budget is a real issue some large Organisations / Council's procure devices rather than lease them and if you speak nicely they maybe able to help with some that are end of life for them you may need to get a drive and more memory to get them working then look to install windows.
All the best.
Just to round this thread off, I've finally purchased my son's computer, and ended up spending a decent amount more than the original budget of $1k, but I accept I was asking a lot for a relatively small budget.
Ended up with an Asus Vivobook Flip for $1239, as recommended here, but with a Ryzen 5 4500U plus a 512GB HD and the stylus included it should be more than adequate for his purposes. That Lenovo above at $1100 would have been pretty decent, too, had I seen that prior (doh!), but in the end I had settled on trying to find one with the latest gen Ryzen (which is why I went away from the Huawei D15, which my son was keen on - I see they're no longer at PB Tech but the D14 still with the 3500U is now at JB Hifi for $1k).
