jonathan18: My son managed to break his ‘military grade’ Chromebook (a Lenovo 500e) in a case with a substantial rubber bumper, so I’d note nothing is impossible for the clumsiest/slackest of kids! (And, since then, he’s managed to crack the screen of my once-was-quality Asus C302 Chromebook)

@Loismustdye: one thing to be mindful of is it’s not necessarily the case the school insists on Chromebooks or Apple laptops; if this intermediate is the same as my kids went to/are still at (initials being RI) I know for sure there are many kids there who have Windows laptops and don’t have any issues. I recall reading/hearing the same thing from this school when my eldest was enrolling a few years back - ie, it must be CB or Apple - (you’ll find a thread somewhere on GZ from me seeking the same advice as you are!), but it’s clear it’s not a hard and fast requirement.

That said, it’s not that I’m trying to put you off Chromebooks - just that you may well have more choice than they’re leading you to believe, if it is that same school.

Personally, I’m looking to get the little sh!t a second-hand Windows laptop for next year, in the hope he’ll not have destroyed it before he starts high school the following year.

Haha yeah its the same school. Interesting to know theres a few windows devices happily being used as well.
Kind of leaning to the chromebook as it’ll likely be a different device for high school.
If either of them wants a pc for games later in life im more than happy to help them build one haha

A MacBook will likely last them all through High School too. I've not seen too many High Schools recommend Chromebook. So it may be a false economy to go Chromebook, worth checking with potential future High Schools.

Getting more than 2-3 years out of a laptop with kids at school is a good effort. For some kids they are semi-consumables. For other kids they'll last a long time.

Generally if a school says it likes x or y it’s generally to do with on site support.
On site support being mainly teachers who can quickly sort out google docs and basic issues

Teachers won’t give much time to those students using anything other than what was recommended and instead refer them elsewhere for the quick general fixes.

Just picked one of these up for my daughter from NL, $698 on special (until today), interesting the model code for has it spec'd for 4GB...but this one has 8GB (and 128GB eMMC), given the HD+ screen (which is also touch) it's a pretty good deal all around. My daughter was wanting a MacBook Air, however she is very pleased with this given how easy it is to use, fairly robust and will get software updates till the end of the decade (I doubt it will actually last that long, but great the software updates run the long)

If you have an iphone I'd recommend getting some of these and ducttaping one onto each lid.   Doesn't look smick, but that's my son's problem not mine.

Saved us before.

We bought 8 of these for various things (keyrings, one in each car glovebox, etc) and so far only 1 has failed - it stopped beeping when requested, still shows approximate location though.

We're in the same boat for my daughter for next year.  My sons went to a different school and didn't need a device till Year 9 and Windows/Mac were recommended.  We've had a fair bit of experience with Windows laptops and went with discounted Thinkpads.  However, my daughter needs a device from Year 7 and they recommend Chromebooks, which we have no experience with.

Noel currently has a HP Chromebook 11 G9 on special for $309.  Celeron 4500, 4Gb RAM, 32 Gb eMMC, WiFi 6.  Seems pretty much what we're after.

Seems fine however for $70 more you can move to a quad core and 8gb ram.

I'd seriously consider it - might give an extra year or two of performance based life. Also if they use things like Minecraft education they'll notice the difference.

We have 2 of the Lenovo Chromebooks, one had a keyboard issue last year but they fixed it no questions asked. Really good machines does everything needed for school even works with our maths tutoring sessions with the tutor based in the Philippines

Yeah, that's a good option too.  It's actually $82 more than the HP at Noel, but still definitely worth considering.

I guess the diff is an interesting issue at this low end of the market.  i.e. $82 extra for added processing power and RAM on a PC/laptop would generally be a no-brainer.  However, compared to a $309 machine, it's a 26% price increase which is huge relative increase.  So it's an interesting conundrum.

Note, I'm assuming this will be used for 2 years of intermediate, then replaced with a much more powerful Windows PC for Year 9 and beyond anyway.  So hard for me to know if worth it.
