I just created a new non-admin user for repairs—no way I'd give full access to my laptop connected to a Microsoft account.

Which you cant do if its basically kaput. But yeah this would be a good option if you can.

I had this issue when I went to get an iphone battery replaced by an authorised dealer. It seems crazy IMO that they can't check things after a battery replacement from a diagnostic screen without booting into the full OS. It is one reason I had non user replaceable batteries in devices.

Apple do tell you to backup your iPhone and factory reset it before taking it to an AASP.

In part that's the "all care no responsibility" for any data, saves arguments over lost photos and stuff.

But it's mainly that in many cases you're not getting the same device back as you took in, you're getting a different refurb unit.

Clone the drive to another, boot off that drive in another machine, create a new admin and trash your own account on the cloned drive

Or install a fresh os on a spare HDD and swap that in.

It's such a bizarre situation - as an IT worker myself you know that you're always finding yourself in privaledged situations and learn to turn off your memory or avert your eyes to any sensitive info you may have presented in front of you. I like to think those I work with in the same industry do the same but you can't trust everyone.

I've always wondered, how would you interview new employees to ensure you can hire someone trustworthy?

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

A timely reminder not to share passwords with the people repairing your hardware.

Hopefully the police take action here.

And given the story has the headlines of mobile phones and nudes, its now the main feature on Stuff's dynamic front page 😃
