Just want to add i brought a ASUS N10 J

Some people dont call this a netbook but I do, is pricey around $1300 but great size being 10.2 in TFT active matrix and 1024 x 600 ( WSVGA )

Intel Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz
2 GB / 2 GB (max)
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS / Intel GMA 950 and Mobile Intel 945GSE Express Yes it has both - has a switch.
Bluetooth
80211 b,g and n
running Vist prem but mine is now on Win 7 and loves it for bootup and speed.

This has become my main computer because of the size and performance.

back on topic.... if you were to purchase a dell mini 9 from dell directly it doesnt seem to mention the hsdpa connectivity and there is no option to add it. Does this mean you can only do it through vodafone?

The reason I ask is that you $50 off at dell and twice the disk space 16GB instead of 8GB.

Also are there other mini's that you can buy that have a slot or something where you could add an aftermarket hsdpa card (if they exist). My wife wants to get broadband and her own laptop just for surfing but doesnt want to go to voda and would rather go XT. The only other option is use the really old thinkpad with an XT mobile phone and teethering it. However the phone is more expensive than the laptop.

Yes, it seems you can only get the built-in 3G with Vodafone. scottjpalmer here bought a HSDPA card off eBay UK and it works fine on his Dell laptop. Contact him for more information...

does that possibly mean that there are models of netbooks that allow an additional card to be inserted i.e they have a slot for it like in the odl days when wireless cards where add extras in notebooks.?

Search ebay for a Novatel Wireless EU870D or a Dell 5520 (they are the same thing).

It is touch and go though - my Dell XPS M1330 appeared to be BIOS locked to prevent me using other modules. The other thing to check is sometimes a laptop will have the slot for the module but not the SIM card slot or the antennas integrated.

One other thing to bear in mind, most modules are supplied installed in laptops by telcos so the support from Dell is near nil and there are issues with firmware, connection software, etc

In summary, unless you are confident in your abilities and you want to play, buy whatever Vodafone offers or wait until Telecom offers something . . .
