This is my 6th (or 7th if you count the replacement (8th if you count ITS replacement ;-))) laptop, and this is the first time I've ever noticed this problem with any of my laptop displays. I find that very ironic, considering this is probably the first "premium" laptop I've owned. I did have a couple of Dell Latitudes and a Sony Vaio, which may or may not be considered in a similar league when it comes to build quality. Although looking at the construction of the Macbook Pro, it seems to me (screen issues notwithstanding) that it should be a few steps ahead in the build quality stakes.
Couple the screen problems I've experienced with the reported problems with the iPhone 4 (a lot of broken flashes are being reported on http://www.iphonewzealand.co.nz), and I think that Apple may be on a dangerous downward trend with its usually dependable build quality.
You do read a lot on forums about Apple's policy on stuck pixels etc, but bear in mind that most of this is from people in the USA, where they have far less consumer protection legislation than we do. So for them, the manufacturer's policy is important, for us it is irrelevant.

Thanks for the reassurance, talisker. I was a little concerned of my rights, after googling the problem and seeing numerous references to Apples pixel policy.
I must say that to their credit, Noel Leeming have been handling this very well, and have been very accommodating and understanding when dealing with me. This whole process has made me feel like a pedantic wee bastard though, but I still stand by my assertion that a $3500 laptop should not have any manufacturing defects.
I wish I'd done the same thing for this laptop. It has a blue stuck subpixel. I noticed it on first boot up and always see it when there's a black screen, but I've just learnt to live with it.
Sometimes I ask the store whether I can turn on the laptop first before I take it home just in case there are pixel issues. 9/10 they are OK with that.
