System: Gateway is also an Acer brand so that would put Acer at the top of the list for malfunctions.

This is incorrect. It is the percentage... HP will still be on the highest list if gateway and acer are combined.

My personal choice would be Toshiba, based on my personal experience. I used to own a top-end acer tablet PC that cost me ~$3500 and it is definitely a nice laptop. Nil issue despite being turned 'on' almost 24 hours a day for 4 years. I dropped it few times and still has no issue with it. Generally, if you pay for premium price, you will have a premium product (this is not always true). Good luck.

Anything but an Acer, too much trouble with the build quality (strength of the screen part causing vertical cracks down the center of the screen especially on > 15 inch models..)

Toshiba business models although not the flashiest, seem good.

Sony Vaio usually pretty good although the one I had lost a lot of the rubber feet / screen bumpers which was annoying as they were tiny and not very securely held on..

Now I have a Macbook Pro and the construction is solid as a rock, nothing bends or creaks, the feet are really securely attached and nothing has come off.  Best laptop I have had.

I recommend Sony Vaio. Solid, reliable and looks good. I've had ThinkPads and Toshs for work but my Sony is best.

Wow thankyou ALL so very much for your opinions and contributions. An abundance of information here. I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately it took a while for the replies to start flowing for this thread and by then I had already made a purchase.

Yes, it is an Acer. That is all I will say. So far, so good.

Cheers all.

i haved owned/own a asus,acer,toshiba and a HP these are my experiences.

Acer - Cheap in money terms, didnt have any major problems with it ie motherboard. after about 2 years the webcam stopped working. this wasn't a major problem as used it once in a blue moon.

Asus - This has had no problems at all. owned for almost a year and half now and still works like they day i brought it. It came with a standard 2 year manufactures warranty to so that was a bonus.

HP - This was a hunk of junk, not only was it the most expensive laptop ive owned it was the one that failed most. first my HDD died, then The screen and to top it all off after about 1 year the motherboard died. inbetween the brokeness I only got to use it for a total of six months haha, in the end dick smiths gave me a Toshiba to replace it.

Toshiba - This has been going strong. haven't had a issue at all

I reckon its pretty hard to say that one brand is better than the other as it comes down to personal experience with that brand a lot of the time. i've heard people swear by HP which was what swayed my decision to buy it in the first place, but now i think they only produce crap. where on the other hand i've heard people say acer is crap but i would rate them over some other brands.

theres my 2cents peepz :)

i've had several toshiba and hp laptops in the past. currently have a lenovo and pretty happy with it.

a large number of laptop issues are due to failing HDDs. replacing them with an SSD helps improve reliability
