In comparison with that toshiba link, with the laptop link I posted above, I would rather have the 4th ram and a 320gb hdd instead of a 2gb ram and 500gb hdd. You will be buying an external anyway as u said :) so 320gb would be ok for now

IMHO I cannot see why you would remove Windows 7 Home. Also I am guessing that whatever your friend is suggesting putting on is pirated which opens you up to a whole bunch of other risks. What is your friends reasoning for not liking W7 Home Prem?

the only real downsides to W7HP are the lack of Windows XP mode and perhaps the network domain support

other than that there is no reason to change.

I wouldn't suggest changing versions unless these are important functions. And if you are changing versions there are, as noted above, piracy issues if your friend isn't using windows genuine software.

yes but virtual box isn't that great for gaming. While it can provide more colours than xp mode in win7, it suffers in processing - so games still run better in copatibility mode than VB XP

Must be some old games there considering i have demonstar running in windows 7 home prem no issues.
Of course virtual box is bad for gaming since there is no direct x and it runs virtual memory. The main thing i use VB for is programming with vb6 since vb6 wont work on w7

Sony Vaio is too expensive. For a good laptop, if no gaming is involved I'd look at the Dell Inspiron 15.

Am I right in thinking that the Inspirons don't have Gigabit ethernet, only 10/100? Seems an odd limitation.

I have a gigabit network at home and it makes a lot of difference shuffling files around between my media server and laptop.
