Dairyxox: Personally I'd hotspot, but I know less computer savy people who need mobility and a 3G/LTE version would be very attractive for them.

Maybe the telcos would be more motivated to sell them here too

I'm with 2 degrees so sharing data is easy and cost effective hence i would rather have multiple 3/4G devices then muck around with hotspoting

lxsw20: They look like they will be a good secondary device for the guys at work that commute a bit and refuse to take their laptops due to the weight.

That's exactly why I'd want one.

Either that or as a primary device, with a dock.

I don't do much that consumes processor power or resources, so I'd be perfectly happy with an Atom.

I use cloud-based document storage and spend my day emailing or on the net, with the odd spreadsheet and word doc or PowerPoint slideshow thrown in.

Sounds like my ideal device.

Wade: In real world terms I wonder how close the 128GB version's performance will to an i3 SP3? I'm hoping it might be relatively close but with the benefits of  an atom's frugal power usage?

Will be interesting to see what the other manufacturers do with these new processors also

See my previous reply on performance.

Yes i was a bit slow in writing my post and yours and a few other posts were made :P

I'm onto my second Atom W8 tablet, they are brilliant, my current device (Stream 8) on paper should be a fail but works surprisingly well, the Surface by comparison should be a powerhouse and more than enough for the average 'mum & dad' user

Are the 128GB LTE versions likely to be ranged in NZ?

no LTE for NZ at this stage.  I need to get some minimum order quantities to get that model in.  with the USB port you can use a modem, or WiFi tether to smartphone etc, or parallel import or buy another Windows product from an OEM that sells LTE here.

Geez, you have no idea how many people need one of these here.
Currently there aren't really any (at least well known) alternatives so they opt for an ipad thing (which they they can't bloody use or doesn't do everything they need).

The small businesses like to get the hardware and 4G plan from Spark / Vodafone etc. Except its really only the crapple ipads there.

Surface + LTE + office, storage and services + availability from telcos on plans = gold.

NZers probably better off preordering from NZ

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msnz/en_NZ/pdp/productID.314935000

pricing is pretty similar and you'll get a NZ warranty / CGA etc

Curious how the performance will be for games....will much of my steam library run on a Surface 3 or would I still need a Surface Pro 3?

depends what games.  I'd probably go for the core i processor myself

Surface 3 graphics is 1.5x the perf of iPad Air 2, and 1.05x compute performance

and the i5 Surface Pro 3 is 1.9x graphics, and upto 3.6x compute performance

Not aiming at the top end stuff but more the basics.  Will have to look into as have lost track of CPU speeds and where everything ranks....assuming the Surface Pro 3 is still the way to go.

I am really interested in one. I am happy with windows on Atom performance and I think this could make a very nice second device.

it is actually a really amazing device to use on the go between meetings, on the road in taxis and planes etc.

I'm using it a lot for typing documents, emails and presentations at the moment.  The keyboard works really well, the type cover itself is just slightly thicker because of the 10.8" screen formfactor vs Pro 3 - meaning you have slightly more z downwards travel, it just feels better.

The precision touchpad is still great, the screen is slightly brighter than Pro 3, the colours really pop-out, the cameras are way better when I'm doing Skype calls, esp FFC and then autofocus on the rear, the touch, the pen for inking, the lighter, thinner, more compact combination comes together and works really well for Surface Pro 3s little brother.

My 2c.

I was looking at getting an HP Stream for uni in July. The Surface 3 has now peaked my interest.

Would that Edu package deal be released before July? =)

I have an HP stream already. Its a fantastic piece of hardware for the price.
Good screen, use Office, net and reading PDFs.

However I would probably be won over with Surface 3 + LTE and I would have to switch.   :)
