Thanks for the replies folks, really appreciate all the help.

This is my plan for tomorrow...

Boot up the Laptop, upgrade to windows 10, download Macrium. Then use the software to copy all the system files (If that's what you call them) over to The SSD using The Usb 3.0 Enclosure. Take out the current 2TB HDD, replace with SDD + boot up.

Sound ok?

NO

1. create Windows 10 USB install stick: http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-download/windows10?OCID=reserve_r_PostReserve_MediaCreationTool
2. use this to do an upgrade to Windows 10 on new laptop
3. once upgraded, confirm Windows 10 has activated
4. remove HDD
5. install new SSD
6. boot off the USB stick and do a fresh install of Windows 10 (NB: skip where it asks for product key)
7. confirm Windows 10 is activated
8. run updates until all done
9. check for any driver issues
10. don't install any rubbish from the laptop manufacture :)

I'm getting two different methods here.

Not sure which way to do it...

Yep, 8GB or more. You can then repurpose stick after you've finished. Doing this way, it's a completely clean install on your shiny new SSD :)

I have a 32GB USB stick which has 25.2GB left.

Pretty nervous about this!

Remember that creating the Windows 10 install stick will format the stick, so you can't have any other data on it.

Alright.

Should be home from work around 6-7PM.

Have spent most of the day looking around at other laptops/tablets, just making sure that this is what I want to do, because once the seal is broken on the laptop box, there's no going back.

Should be a fun night doing all of this!

If you are getting a brand-new laptop fresh out of the box you should leave the battery charging overnight (12 hours plus) before you even start playing with it.
This will improve battery life in the long term.
Will your laptop come with Windows 8 or Windows 10?
Either way it will take time to do the first install of the operating system - this is required to activate Windows. Give that 1 or 2 hours for starters.
Only then can you think about swapping hard drives.

The battery tip apparently is a myth for today's Laptop battery. Certainly true for old nicd ones
