Is the Razer Blade available in New Zealand at all? Spent a week or two researching and ultimately deciding on one before finding out they're not available here (or, at least, not from what I could see). Am I missing something?

Djmixerdomo:

I've been using a Skylake (2015) Dell XPS 13 for the past several months and I have to say it is the best laptop I've ever owned.

I'm looking for a new laptop too. And very similar to the OP, I've narrowed it down to the HP Spectre and XPS 13.

At the moment I have to take two laptops around the country for work (both fat 15" jobbies) and naturally they're so locked down they are purely for work. So my personal laptop needs to be light and small.

I currently use an old Samsung 500T hybrid which worked quite well for browsing the internet and the odd movie, but since Win 10 it's struggled. I never use it as a tablet, or the pen (I have a 2013 Nexus 7) so I'm definitely after a laptop.

The main reason for the change is I've recently got a GoPro, and the Samsung really struggles with the footage.

The Spectre looks absolutely gorgeous, but complaints seem to be that it's noisy and has average battery life. I've always owned cheaper, lower powered netbooks and laptops, so I figure it's time I spend a bit more and get something more powerful.

So I've narrowed it down to the 3 XPS 13's.

All have I7, $2719 for the 512GB with 16GB of Ram and touchscreen

$2294 for 256GB and 8GB of Ram, touchscreen

$1999 for 256GB and 8GB of ram, no touchscreen.

I would say my budget is $2500, but is it worth stretching it to get the bigger hard drive and more ram?

Just note that the qhd screen is brighter but the 1080p screen lasts 30% longer

That's a really useful tip. If I can get away with more battery life it will save me taking a third AC charger away with me.

@Mudguard

I still haven't got myself a new laptop yet, currently actually looking at Surface Pros, even though I didn't think I would be.

Anyway, something I always ask myself is what is the extra x amount of ram or x amount of hard drive space going to be used for?

The $2K XPS would be fine for my needs, would it be fine for yours too?

The extra $300 for a touchscreen seems like quite a bit for something you may not use very often once the novelty wears off. But I could be wrong and you may need the touchscreen.

Also, think I've gone off the spectre now. It doesn't have an HDMI port which I was disappointed about.

You can purchase them in Australia for a ridiculous amount. Better off with the XPS line.

Thank you. Couldn't afford the spec I wanted new, so this seems good for me.

good buy as said, that sku has been known to have 'coil whine' issues iirc dell have a 15 day return policy(from day of arrival) so plenty of time to give it a good go and make a final decision.

I'm finding it hard to "settle" for the lower spec'd non-touch screen XPS 13, but don't want the reflective screen and lower battery life of the touch version. They don't offer the non-touch model with 16gb and 512gb, and the online rep told me it wasn't upgradeable even if i did it myself.. although i assume with a screw driver at least the SSD could be changed?

For anyone interested, he also told me they'd be putting the Kaby Lake processors into the XPS 15 from Jan 6. Also tempting, but i assume it obviously wouldn't be on special for a while
