That is very bold of ASUS I guess the Atom will be the top of the range item 901 is bigger then 900 (not by much).

How is the battery life on the 900? The new 901 Atoms are clocking in at 7.5 hours http://www.hothardware.com/News/ASUS_Eee_PC_901_1000_and_1000H_Unveiled/.

I am looking at purchasing the Asus Eee 900 - I do a lot of wordprocessing and would want to use my Seagate 250g portable hard drive. Would that be ok with this little laptop?

Yeah no probs! I use a 250G WD HDD every day with my Eee. I stream music and video from it no problem it works great.

Thanks for that... you wouldn't be able to run anything like Photoshop Elements would you? Could you edit photos from it with any programs?

The Eee PC would be a bit slow for that. It's not meant to be a graphics workstation, but a note taking notebook.

I run GIMP free photo editor on mine with no problems at all (@900mhz). Sometimes intense rendering may take a while but for reasonably basic design and editing its great. I'd imagine Photoshop and Illustrator would struggle a little bit - its not really designed for this sort of intensive processing.

ipsi: Sadly, DSE has said they won't be getting the 900 linux ones until the end of next week, at least in Wellington. Don't know what the hell is up with that. I want one, and they said they'd be launching today, but are they? Apparently not. They only have the XP ones in-stock.

You can get them around though. NotebookCity have the Asus EEE 900 for $699 currently, which is fifty bucks cheaper than DSE too!

I'm still keen to have a play with one - I'd like to compare with an HP 2133b and see which is nicer - they are a couple hundy more, but I expect it's a physically smaller device too. ~~AFAIK the HP is 8.9" screen and doesn't have the EEE's black panels to the sides of the screen. What is up with that?~~ UPDATED: I now read that the EEEE900 has full-width screen - choice :)

I have my friends Eee PC 900 here. She is going to America and I was transferrring address books and things for her. The only new program I have loaded is a free anti virus program Avira. But, when I loaded it it said the virtual memory was low and that there is only a VERY SMALL amount of space left on the C Drive - less than recommended.

What is the solution? She wants to have anti virus software.

She really only wants to be able to do email, a bit of wordprocessing maybe, and surf the internet when away.

Would be most grateful for any advice.

Folks, I would appreciate some answers from those using the ASUSEee 900. With XP installed, how much actual 'disk space' is left?

Also, is it a 'standard' XP set up or a special UMPC cut-down version?

I've used the 701 with Xandros and it has anti-virus etc ready-to-go, presumably the XP version still requires this to be installed by the user?

If you are considering a purchase, I have a 901 WinXP and it has 8GB available. the default load has the disk split into 2 partitions. The XP load does not appear to be cut down, in fact it appears more vanila than my Vaio.

Microsoft say it needs 1.2Gb disk space to save the "uninstall/backup" files, which is almost impossible using the Eee C drive.

Can SP 3 be installed without the unisntall files?

901 comes with SP3 preinstalled. Can the install/uninstall files be redirected to an SDCard?
