My experience, for what it's worth: I wanted a mid-range notebook, could not find anything in NZ that met my specs irrespective of price, did find a model I liked on Amazon. I bought it and had it sent to my sister who lives in the States (no delivery to NZ because of battery concerns). She unboxed it, did the paperwork to ship it here (battery not a problem in itself, but required bureaucratic runaround to get correct authorisation) and eventually I received it. I asked sister to declare value just under $400 threshold but she sent it express, thinking she was doing me a favour, and the extra postage put it just over, so I got hammered with tax, fee for collecting tax, and tax on tax + fee because of a $5 difference. No doubt I deserved it for trying to cheat. Anyway, it was still a lot cheaper than anything equivalent here, and it had the specs I wanted.
Soon after it developed a problem with the trackpad. Frustrating but not worth trying to fix on overseas warranty. This is a warning. In my case, I was eventually able to find information from others with the same problem who had fixed it, and after the warranty period expired, I opened it up and repaired it myself. So it worked out okay. I am not offering advice either way, just saying what happened in my case.

No I meant, could my cousin take it out of the box turn it on set it up and send it to me without me having to go there?
If your cousin buys it in Australia they would pay sales tax right?
Then your cousin uses it, puts it in a box and send it to you, unless you declare it under which is fraud and hope you don't get caught out ... NZ Customs will charge you import tax. I have been told by NZ Customs on the phone that if you send someone a gift with a birthday card inside it ... you would still get taxed.
From what it looks like is that you purchase the laptop with your name (on the receipt) and you pay tax, and when you leave the Australian airport you get this GST refunded to you.

Average Joe goes overseas, sees a nice laptop or smartphone, he buys it. Uses it. Takes it back on the plane overseas, no one is gonna suspect it. A lot of people carry laptops and phones on their travels ... If you send it .. tax is payable. I have had laptops send to be, second hand ones from eBay and I have paid tax. I have bought $600NZ of Nikon lenses from a USA shop and I have paid tax.

Actual example Overseas trip , I took my camera & lenses On return, NZ customs wanted to ping me on my obviously used camera . I had to prove I bought it in NZ & took it with me .
So , its a crap shoot. Customs dont have the manpower to check & value everything.

Yeah that happened in Australia airport once to me. It is like to me, umm ... I don't know anyone in AU. I just went there for 2 or 3 nights to visit the tourist attractions like another noob. Like the amazing amazing Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, LOL. Went to cafes and McDonalds LOL. At least I had a my own written itinerary what I was doing day by day and I had hotel reservations. Breakfast and a visit at Sydney Seafood Market lol.... all the stuff the locals think I am a weirdo. About the same when I go to Auckland LOL. I walked down Queens Street, I went to the waterfront, I drove to somewhere to photograph the bridge, I went to Viaduct Basin for a walk, lol.
