What is the frequency of Windows 10 "feature updates" practically speaking... approx. every 9 months?

So you would have to prepare to expect another update to happen and the system to re-initialise again sometime according to that schedule.

+ 1G security rollups every month (2nd tues from memory)

Good thing is 1709 is going to start to download and apply ONLY what it needs, not the whole package and skip half of it.

Thanks again everyone for your advice and input.

Ultimately I should of done my homework before purchasing the laptop. Currently is there anything that I am able to do on the terms of returning/asking for a refund?
It hasn't turnt itself off again, but is still running slow- but by the sounds of it; that's to be expected.
To those that enquired, it was purchased from Noel Leeming, and they won't be getting any more of my business unfortunately. Although it might be my own fault for not asking more questions, I feel like I've been cheated as the sales rep spoke so highly of this model (was originally looking at a much cheaper, more simple model). He spoke about how amazing it was going to be, so far it's just been a headache..

I don't like your chances of a refund, I'd say at most they will offer you store credit for return. If you are still in need of a notebook PC perhaps ask them for an exchange for this model?

HP 15-bw502au Notebook

  • A6-9220 <-- lower spec processor of same generation, although surprisingly benchmarks don't suggest too much difference to A9-9420 (I'm not too familiar with 7th gen AMD mobile APUs)
  • 8 GB DDR4 <-- same amount of RAM
  • 256GB SSD <-- faster but quarter of previous storage capacity
  • AMD R4 graphics <-- lower spec UMA graphics

$693 until sold out / 23 January. Online clearance suggests this model may not be available in-store but I would phone to check to see if they can arrange a demo in store before buying.

Only model under $1k I could find on their online catalogue that has an SSD, you could ask them if they sell any others.

Ask for a refund, take it further if they don't get you one, don't buy Acer.

noel leemings service has started going down hill, now that they have no store phone numbers and everything that was listed is disconnected making you call head office in auckland, you have to call the 0800 number and if your lucky some one will answer your call and or put you through to your local store,

the next thing that pissed me off was that they sold me a product that they didn't have in stock at either branch within hamilton and blatantly lied as to when it would be in stock and made multiple excuses as to when it would arrive,

it wasn't until i rang them multiple times in one week after the expected date it was mean to arrive that i got a final answer that still wasn't acceptable, even then the dates still changed when i spoke to different people to chase it up,

the final solution was heading down to their DC and talking to the guys in the ware house and getting some real answers from them (the dates that they gave me were also different from the ones i was give on the phone),

the guy looked up to see what was in stock and where and found one in tauranga that had been there for some time, so they picked that one up for me (the only helpful lot at noel leeming so far).

it took about 3-4 weeks for the item to turn up which is pretty bad considering they had all my contact details and failed to let me know when they would be getting some more stock, they wouldn't even let the floor stock go, so very bad service on their part.

Define "running slow" . Your expectations may be unrealistic for a mid price Win notebook running Win10 ?
Running slow for many is actually slow wifi or internet. Or too many open programs for a dual core .
A wipe & reload can sometimes do wonders , it will clear out all the preloaded crap & user installed crap

NL sales rep are just that. A salesman. He wouldnt have tested every notebook they sell .
His job is to sell stuff they stock. Exactly the same as any other retailer  .

An SSD upgrade would be the 1st place to start , that alone can make a big difference .

What is the Model no & spec ?
Chances are the spec should be OK (apart from HD speed)

The new versions of Windows 10 does slow it down a lot. I really wish Microsoft would stop releasing new versions that add bloated features that I certainly don’t use, such as 3D painting. If I was doing that, I would get a specialist program that has better functionality. Or at least give us the option to opt out of the new features, like Apple iOS does with the ability to reinstall apples default apps. On my laptop I have gone back to windows 8, as windows 10 is a dog on it and it has problems with power management in 10

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but it could also be the recent security updates for the processor vulnerabilities which have the potential to slow it down a lot.

Windows 10 actually seems faster than Windows 8 and comparable to Windows 7, which was a good release.

The latest security updates should impact only some types of workloads and not really web browsing, email, streaming.

I'd say there's a good chance of the HDD being the bottleneck for setup, updates. As for playing a movie, it could be the system settling after setup - was it downloading or uploading OneDrive files? Are you using online backup at the time? These operations consume disk by creating temporary storage, or shadow copies.

Sorry, just not clear if this problem is still ongoing or just happened when unboxing/setup of this system.

my sister got something like that spec without checking first - after complaining about speed - I look it, and it was windows update and a slow HDD, causing massive disk queue length - nothing wrong with PC, just cheap HDD - as for usb - that sounds like power saving turning off USB to me - somewhere in the power management you can turn it off
