joker97: Yup coil whine since day 1.

I have a very quiet office and it does my head in. Stopped migrating from my MBP until I see what they do. Starting to think I don't like the idea of them cracking it open and replacing the motherboard on a brand new machine. Oh well. My wife thinks I am mad as she can't hear it. it does my head in.

please check the sleep thing. use it everyday, do stuff, don't restart it for a few days (eg sleep), and then let it be - please tell me if your computer sleeps on its own after those days.

On the hunt now for a replacement laptop that has similar spec to this. Not many out there in my searching other than a MBP which I was trying to not do. Such a great machine but pity I can't stand to have it on for more than 20 minutes due to the coil whine.

Does your coil whine all the time or only when the cpu is worked

From the moment windows has "stopped" loading, it's tone can change at times but it's at a high pitch that just drives me mad. If you unplug the AC adapter it stops or while the battery is charging. Once it hits 100% it whines away again. I try each day to see if I can get use to it but sadly longest I have lasted in 30 minutes

Dell (unisys) replaced the motherboard today, no difference to the sound. Dell (call centre's) recommendation is to replace the process which I pointed out is part of the motherboard they just replaced. They are going away to research some options for a couple of days. my guess is they will just offer a refund. I would so perfer a machine that doesn't have this issue

The engineer was really good, he was an older chap and he couldn't hear it. As you get older you can't hear things as higher pitch. maybe I just need to get older. Mrs suggested I got play with some power tools for a bit and then see if I can still hear it. Love the machine, just gutted about this problem which I expect will end in a refund and I will consider another MBP but really can't be borthered with Bootcamp or OSX. Love what this dell offers

I'm glad I can't hear mine... maybe because I live in a house full of large dogs that my hearing is a bit buggered already. This machine is really quite nice, it's the Windows machine that finally enticed me away from MBP and OSX.

the XPS 15 wiki (yes someone made one, google it) says it shouldn't have any ripples when you yank on the screen (eg opening or shutting), and if there is ask for replacement. mine has ripples. do yours have ripples?

Ripples? Like we used to see in older softer LCD screens when poked? No, I don't see any kind of ripples on the screen when touching/sliding on it, or "yanking" to open or shut it.

hmm maybe something to raise with the dell people. there is a 1cm diameter ripple (circular) on about the right side of the screen (imagine you divide by thirds it is the intersection of the right vertical third and lower horizontal third).

most visible when i pull on the corner of the screen to open/shut. sometimes even pulling on the middle (webcam area).

so you guys don't have that circular ripple?
