I've always liked the innovation of the Surface line, but there are 2 big issues which in my book are a killer.

1. The models in NZ do not have 4G (Tethering is NOT a solution for this.)
2. Core components (such as the type cover) are expensive addon's.

All and all I would like the price point of the latest model if it included these features.

At the end of the day Im looking at buying a iPad Air 2 simply because it is the only competent tablet with 4G that is available in NZ.

I wonder why you think tethering isn't an option, surely you would have your phone with you whenever you had this with you?

Absolutely agree with your second comment. It's pretty unusable as a productivity tool without a keyboard and a copy of office. Though I strongly dislike Subscription based office being included on devices. I like perpetual ownership.

The Ipad 2 isn't a comparable device to the Surface tablets in my opinion. One is a consumption device, one has the potential to be a proper work tool.

The number of people who went against our advice and bought iPads to replace laptops who then went and bought laptops after, is staggering, over 90%.

I think tethering is a workaround, not a solution because you have TWO things running out of battery quickly instead of using different radios for different use cases, consuming different power.

Tethering isn't a option for a few reasons:

  1. It isn't instantly on, you have to enable it (or forever have your phone on charge).
  2. It significantly drains your phones battery, meaning it will no longer last a day.
  3. Taking calls on your phone can interfere with the tethering.
  4. Simply put, you are depending on another device to do what one device should do in itself.

The iPad is absolutely a comparable device to the Surface tablets, for my use. This is the key.

I am sure there are good use cases where the Surface has value, but for me I am either doing:

  1. Significant data entry for which I will always use my laptop (nothing beats a real keyboard, yes I have tried the type cover)
  2. A small amount of data entry for which a Surface may be better (however it needs a $200~ type cover and would need to be tethered to my phone which eliminates this option).
  3. Diagnostics which require next to no data entry, which a iPad is perfectly suitable for.

In the end there is no significant advantage to the Surface in my eyes. I will not use a docking station as I have a proper office setup at home.

I will NOT be replacing my laptop with an iPad (completely different purposes). By the way, my laptop has 3G.

As I said above, I love the concept, but to me it has failed in implementation. For some users I'm sure it is great, however for me it is a significant extra hassle over an iPad.

Still need to make a rigid hinge keyboard dock so you can use it like a laptop, I wonder how many versions of a good keyboard dock are sitting around the product dev room just waiting to be green lit from higher up.

Around the place looks to me like many non-IT industry and home users are now expecting internet everywhere on the computer just like the phone. The only way to deliver that is cellular. Price of internal components need to come down but also vendors could start to get creative and bundle preferred telco deals to bring down the purchase price by a few dollars to speed introduction.

I'm interested in getting this laptop / tablet for my wife as she wants something running proper office software. And this device includes a one year subscription to Office 365 Personal.

Just got off the phone with Microsoft as I wanted to understand how the Office 365 Personal offer worked if you had already got this product via their OneDrive / Office 365 promotion... After being put on hold a couple of times and passed between a couple of people, I wasn't impressed with the answer and this Office 365 Personal promotion is worthless if you've already got it.

I hope they rethink their promotion and offer something better for people like me...

Looking forward to your review (?) freitasm. Am seriously considering getting one for myself.

Any chance you could do some cpu benchmarks (e.g. passmark)? I want to see how the atom cpu compares with an i3.

Cheers
