After a lot of debate and consideration I have narrowed it down to the following. I will either stay with what I have or buy a MacBook Pro, or buy an iMac or a new Windows PC or a Windows Laptop

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

after much soul searching I have decided to stay using  a desktop. I am tossing up between the 22.5" iMac or another 27" iMac. Has anyone here had experience of the 21.5 iMac with Retina screen?

The designers that I worked alongside at my previous job had the 27" Retina iMacs - beautiful machines that ran some fairly heavy-duty software with ease. The screens were stunning. I'm on an old 2008 Mac Pro (the big silver tower) at the moment but if I had to replace that it would be with a 27" iMac. I'd find the 21" screen too small, going down from the 30" cinema display I have at the moment, but it does take up a lot of the desk! Another reason I'd go for the 27" is that they come with more powerful processors. I want to be as future-proof as possible.

Have you looked at the Mac Mini? Teeny footprint. Portable. You can use your iPad as a screen if you need to take it away from your desk. Obviously you'd need a keyboard and monitor. The Mac bluetooth keyboards and magic mice are nice.

My sister went from a PC desktop to a Macbook Pro with Retina (15") and she loves it. She docks it with a screen and keyboard when at her desk.
