MikeB4: I am keen to see these in real life, I am still trying to decide on my next  machine

They will be in store next week

If you're in Auckland or Wellington you're welcome to drop past the Microsoft office, I cab show you my demo unit.

Thankyou very much for that offer really appreciated unfortunately I am experiencing a bad flare up so I am too medicated to drive or move around too much. Will try to get to our local HN
if things settle down soon.

That is unfortunate. Sorry to hear you aren't well. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thank you very much, very appreciated.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Your reseller will quite happily bundle a pen into the price for you.

I'll see what I can find, thanks for the heads up. I have a number of customers interested in these.

send me an email etc get in touch and I can discuss how you can resell these

Ramjet99: Keen to see these in action - staff have been pressuring for tablets for a  long time and I've held them back waiting for the tech capability and the price to start meeting my budget. LTE would be great as we're 2 degrees and have data-only SIMs just looking for a home.

Concerns:
-the nickel-and-diming add-on cost of the accessories will make these unfeasible
-How rugged are they?
-Can you build them from the network with an Ethernet adapter or from the dock?

-all device manufacturers charge extra for add-on accessories.  Loads of other cool Windows tablets and 2n1 detachables available since Surface is unfeasible.  Checkout Toshiba z20, HP Elite X2 1011, HP ElitePad 1000, Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet Helix Gen2, Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 10, Dell Venue Pro 11, Dell Latitude 7350, Acer Switch

-they are not rugged.  If you want rugged best bet is a $4000 Motion R12 or Panasonic ToughPad.  Semi rugged, HP have a new ~$1500 ElitePad 1000 that is factory sealed in a semi-rugged case at factory.  If its just some sort of protection you need, there are folio cases, and also semi-ruggedised cases for Surface like the Incipio Capture or UAG Scout

-Surface 3 can PXE boot with the Surface USB Ethernet adapter or Surface 3 Dock

I don't see an issue with the Pen or Keyboard/cover being an optional extra it gives one exactly that options. Its a good idea, I would want a KB but not a pen so this way I would not end up
with a surplus accessory.

JayADee: I really, really want one of these, or the pro version. Ant ideas on if I should wait and see if the price comes down on one or the other? I want the pen, too.

What is the question? :)

Yes if you wait prices drop

Yes if you wait, there is always something new around the corner

But you have a need for one now?

My iPad is occasionally driving me crazy. I've been waiting for the a surface to mature. Now looks good.

I will be buying one of these next week, probably at Noel Leeming as they offer a $50 discount on the Type Covers.  The $959 version with 4MB RAM looks ideal.  Great timing as my 6-year old Toshiba laptop just died.

I'm sure JB or the other retailers would match that offer if they are more conveniently located for you. Normally they're more than happy to take the business from their competitors.

macuser: Atom in tablets is really compelling, I think this is the right route and will be a great companion for kids at school I think, though there should be an Edu offer for Tablet+Keyboard+Pen for price of iPad Air 2

we are doing a special bundle for EDU of tablet+keyboard+pen

I can't quite comment on the price of that bundle yet.

Hi Nathan,

Do you know when the EDU version might be available?

Also I think I read it could be 32GB storage. I have read reviews of other devices aimed at a similar market and they have said 32 is not enough as the operating system and loaded software takes up most of the space, do you or anyone else think it is a non issue? I presume that most of the school work being done is on office 365 and saved in the cloud so you should not need much space on the device itself.

I tried to have a play on one at Noel Leemings, I really like it and think it would be ideal for the kids. I did get interrupted by the sales assistant who took the pen off me and started doodling so it shows people are keen to try it out :)

Thanks

what I'm saying is if you don't like paying for the accessory, a reseller can bundle it into the invoice for you

We will also have a bundle soon that includes Surface 3 + Dock + keyboard + Pen

There is little to no money in manufacturing and selling hardware

Also any Ntriq pen will work with Surface 3, buy some $10 pens from eBay

The EDU version is 32/2 so it won't be great for shared class sets until Windows 10 Education edition releases. 1:1 device with 32GB should be fine in my experience.

I will come back to you on the timing

the EDU version will be available from the Commercial resellers nor the retailers

Can you run 2 external displays off one of these, with a docking station? If not, can you with the Surface Pro 3?

I know the SP3 can actually run 3 displays externally.

Thanks, I found this: https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-nz/support/music-photos-and-video/connect-surface-pro-to-a-tv-display-or-projector#Daisy-chain

S
o looks like to run 3 you need monitors that allow daisy chaning that plug into the surface, then another monitor plugs into the docking station. It's a bit of a shame the dock doesn't have 2 display outputs. (Unless im missing something obvious here.)

Surface Pro 3 can do 3 external display

Surface 3 can do 1 external display

technically if you use Miracast you can +1 both of those numbers
