nathan: Microsoft does free support for Windows Updates

0800 800 004

its weird as that patch has been out for a while, and nothing has changed in that patch for 2-3 weeks now so its weird your machine would just download it now

Thanks for your comments Nathan.  I figured I'd get a quicker response here than via official channels, and once again, GZ comes up trumps.

Yes, I thought it was weird as well because from the 'Details' web page, nothing in that patch should have anything to do with the sound driver.  However, it was the only thing that changed this morning between when sound was working and when it stopped.  Uninstalled, and voila ... back to normal.  I will take care not to download that particular update again.

FWIW I just rolled my Surface 3 back to Windows 8.1, did all of the available updates from WU including the above and my sound still works

So not sure why you are having this issue sorry :)

Many thanks for looking into it Nathan.  My sound is still working fine without that update, so I'll avoid downloading it in future.

A further update on this...

Windows 8 works a bit differently to 7 in regards to 'Hiding' updates that you don't want.  Consequently, this particular update downloaded itself again as I hadn't hidden it successfully.  Sure enough, no sound again, although to be fair, it still happens occasionally after exiting 'Sleep' mode.  A simple reboot fixes it though, whereas with that update installed, the sound could not be re-activated on my Surface 3.

dan:

thanks for the list, can i ask why Ingram is not able to sell the surface directly to [Ingram] customers - curious why you would do this.

I too am very curious.

I can understand why you may want to restrict who can sell it at a consumer level, but for business customers this makes no sense.

I wouldn't even consider offering it to my customers If it is not available though my wholesale channels, unless my client has a very specific requirement for one. This alone must impact Microsoft's sales greatly, we tell the business what to buy after all!

Surface Announces New Plans to Expand Business Channel

http://blog.surface.com/2015/07/surface-channel-expansion/

We are expanding our channel and will go from having a few hundred partners selling and servicing Surface to a few thousand globally in the coming months.

So if you’re a reseller or systems integrator with strong hardware capabilities, we’re looking forward to welcoming you and we’re excited to see how Surface’s presence in the commercial space will continue to grow – with your help.

Interested partners should go to the Microsoft Partner Network Device Partner Portal and contact an Authorized Device Distributor to learn how to become a partner.

Just ordered the 4GB/128GB from Microsoft store directly. Currently they are including the keyboard and pen with the tablet (actually took this deal into Noel Leeming which they were not able to match).

MS are still advertising the deal on Google, but can't see it on the site? Was it clear or did it just ship with them?

It was clearly stated on their website. I do not see it there now.
