Blah, blah... Oh, look, we posted it even before them...

Seriously though, it's an internal trial.

Oh right, didn't see your article as I come straight to the forums.

Still very cool even if it is an internal trial.

About time, technology has been out for a while, just need more phones with the technology built in but soon we will be having the banks selling cellphones.

Yeah we have only just gotten (and still not widely available) things like Paywave etc. Snapper (aka having another card / device) is irelleavent to me so this is much more meaningful if the trial is sucessful.

Still, my iphone needs an update :) *cough* iPhone 5 *cough*

will that stop it working?
given that NFC is pretty similar to the technology Snapper uses (which requires no power at all), is there any reaosn to think it won't work at all if your phone is off?

(ETA or maybe NFC phones will have a separate mini battery that only powers that low-power NFC part, and lasts wor weeks without a charge)

It will stop working. It's an app.

I thought it was a chip, and that the app simply enables you to interaact with the chip (check balances etc). but for making a payment, the chip does it all just like a snapper card.
Is this incorrect? I'm certianly no expert, just goingby the way it has been explained to me, and the fact that 'running out of battery' seems such on obvious and massive weakness that would kill the technology were there not a way round it.

http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/telecommunications/phones-become-electronic-wallets

""The phones themselves are typically implemented with the ability to do card emulation if the battery is dead," explains Steve McRae, CEO of Merchant360, an NFC integrator in Medford, Ore. Such cards, and key fobs that work the same way, are passive NFC devices that are powered by the radio frequency emissions of the reader. "It is not an NFC technical requirement, but it is a best practice and all the phones are supporting it."

Depends on the handset. Many have support for a power off mode. In this case it works just like any other NFC based plastic card. The app itself is more of a value add - can show nice things like your balance.
That's the theory anyway:)

I'd say this "announcement" was just jumping the gun, by the looks of it (tweet by Tom PS):

"Understand the Auckland "NFC trial" may have been bit over-cooked: just top-up element being trialled - no trial of NFC payments"

weird, the press release clearly states:

"Trial participants will be able to use a mobile phone to make "tap and go" payments to access public transport in Auckland and make purchases at a small selection of retailers."

...

the trial will also use a Westpac credit card to top up a Telecom XT Prepaid account, using Paymark’s infrastructure. This will make it easier for customers to add credit to a prepaid card without having to go online or pay in a store.
