Hi,
Is there a way TNZ could upgrade my existing telecom Thomson 585 router to a new N-one?
I've been very disappointed to find that few months after I've got my telecom contract new tnz users are getting a better model while I still have to pay 199 for this outmoded complete piece of rubbish.

You are paying it off monthly? Usually telecom give them away for free when you are on contract.

I guess you have no rights other than to rely on the niceness of telecom (they are actually quite nice and might help if you ask nicely).

You can buy the new Technicolour TG582n modem from Telecom for $99.95: http://www.telecom.co.nz/internet/modem/overview

Or the Draytek Vigor 120 are excellent routers too if you don't need Wifi and they do PPPoE to PPPoA bridging which can be handy depending on what you're doing.

Plus pretty much all the TP Link routers you can buy are pretty good. Ascent I have personally used to buy many bits of gear (and shouldn't be taken as an official Telecom recommendation of them) offer good prices and do free shipping NZ wide from memory.

If you're looking for something free (which from the sounds of it you are) you can ring up 123 and ask to speak to a Retention Specialist and I think if you sign up for another 12 months they can send you a new router. But I can't say for sure if this is the case. Worth talking to 123 or going to the above link and clicking the "ask a question" and seeing if one of the CSRs can help you.

I'm personally running a Thompson 585 at home and it works fine. I did install my own master filter at my house and I have turned off the Wifi as I have my own AP. Last time I checked I think the link up-time was well in excess of 100 days.

Well, I would expect TNZ to at least upgrade the equipment to a newer model for free while I'm staying with them.
Another thing that TNZ has advertised this as a good deal that you are getting 199$ router for free with 12 month contract. But checking the market you find that just for 99$ you can get much better modem and if you wish to sell your modem on trademe you hadly get more than $35.

I'm pretty sure it's $99 for the connection, and $99 for the modem.

So you're getting a free connection and a free modem. The modem itself doesn't cost $199.

And also to confirm you're still in the initial 12 month contract? If you were not under contract then you could sign another 12 month contract and get the modem for free?

Yes, you are right. The modem was 99 plus 99 for the connection, my mistake. I've been just confused with this 'free connection' as TNZ has actualy charged me $63 so called 'reconnection fee' so I didn't notice that there is 99$ on top of that what was withdrawn, I considered this is the modem price.
Yes, I'm still on my first 12 months contract.

I don't think it's reasonable for you to expect Telecom to upgrade your router.
It works doesn't it?
If it were not working, they would probably replace it for you (which, by the way is way more than other ISPs will do).

Sky do not upgrade users to the latest decoder automatically (and they charge for an upgrade to the MySky to MySky+)

You don't get an upgrade to a new mobile phone for free if a new one comes out while you are under contract.

Telecom have given you a free modem in return for you signing up to 12/24 months (mine was 12). If you want something better, go and buy it. Just don't exepct the shop you bought it from to upgrade it when it is superceded.

Well, TNZ could upgrade the modem to a new one after the first 12 months if I sign on another 12. I think this would be reasonable.

If you buy a brand new car, do you expect the dealer to give you a free upgrade when the new model comes out? of course not.

Yes, that may be reasonable.
They gave me a TiVo for re-signing with them. I have my own modem, but they did offer one also which I turned down.

The 585 I got from Telecom in February last year was an 802.11n model. Are you sure yours isn't? (Regardless, it was still an awful device which I soon replaced with the combination of a Draytek ADSL modem and an Asus RT-n16 router with MIMO).

That said, there was virtually no benefit over 802.11g as it was 2.4Ghz and single-channel.

You aren't.

You see, I didn't buy the modem from TNZ, but rather bought their service. So, it's more rent / lease schema while you are talking about buying a good.
BTW, in may EU countries you are getting a mobile phone upgraded for free while keeping a plan.
