Just got a message telling me that I'm New Zealand's winner of the day and to go to www.apple.co.nz.somedomain.com to pick up my prize. Comes from a US number, +1 (516) 528-5970. Yes, with the dashes and brackets and all. Some stern words need to be had with some carriers maybe?

My Mother is on XT and she received one of these the other day.

Even she guessed it a hoax. With all the media around such wayward practices do people actually fall for these scams still?

If both of you could email me with your mobile numbers (pl at telecom dot co dot nz) then I can forward it through to the relevant teams.

I hate spammers of any type and can chase this up if you want me to.

Had a good chat with the Fraud team today and they are the team who deal with this. Its best to e-mail them directly (fraud at telecom dot co dot nz) and they will chase up.

I've forwarded the two e-mails I had this today through to them and they are actively investigating.

Well, just got another of these and reported it to the fraud team. Sadly, they seem far less interested in stamping out spam and scams than you are... they actually won't chase it up, and just reply saying "nothing we can do" (load of bollocks - Telecom blocks entire providers from delivering SMS at all claiming it's due to spam... surely something can be done about these guys spamming).

This one was to a number which definitely isn't publicly listed - it's the SIM for my data card.

You have to do both, actually. The DIA has quite possibly the worst approach to reporting spam ever. And they really, really need to include a note on how to forward messages on some popular phone models if they insist on requiring you forward the message first. It took me 10 minutes of trying before I gave up and searched Google on how to forward SMS messages on an iPhone.

They're all AT&T (Cingular) cellphones issued in New York. Surely Telecom can have words with AT&T rather than simply saying "we're just a carrier, out of our hands"? I'm sure AT&T doesn't like having spammers on their network either...

Hi we have blocked a majority of these and still looking into this. We have notified the HUB provider to initiate blocking on their end too. Please continue to report any new instances you see.

Yeah, I don't know either. Never a need. Took a few seconds to work out how.

Even so, those are coming from overseas providers. The DIA anti-spam is only for New Zealand originated spam.

Maybe initially, but they do currently accept overseas spam and co-ordinate with overseas authorities now, as long as it's either sent from or to someone in NZ.
