On Friday got a txt from Telecom:

TREAT FRM TELECOM: As part of our $5m Samsung Galaxy DATA Giveaway, here's 500MB FREE for you to use in NZ in the next month. More at http://m.telecom.co.nz/S4a

I have a Samsung Galaxy SII, and yes, the bonus 500MB has been added!

I'm on prepay $19 value pack, so quite chuffed with the extra 500MB!

If it actually is based on device, I wonder I should spoof my nexus4 imei as a samsung handset* :p
I'd find it unlikely that it is though, im guessing its random.

I got it on Prepay (no value packs, just the old grandfathered rates w/ old grandfathered up to 50MB for up to $6 plan) with a SGSII purchased from Noel Leeming. It's possible that it's only going to people with Telecom Galaxy models (i.e. the 'T' versions - i.e. those that were supplied through the Telecom supply chain).

I suppose the issue that I have with this is that operators like Telecom should be a "dumb pipe" and shouldn't be doing different things with different devices. It just seems like a bit of a slippery slope.

I'm not complaining about not getting the extra data (postpaid $39 users got a boost from 500 to 750 MB the other day which is more than enough for me) but it concerns me that some devices are seen as "better" than others. I'd hate to see an environment like with AT&T in the US ("you have an iPhone therefore you must have this particular data plan").
