Hi everyone - I've got a Nexus 4 on Telecom, which has been grand apart from the fact that MMS doesn't work. I can send MMS messages, but are not about to receive them.

All other functions work just fine.

I've had the Telecom store look at it (they recommended that we run a factory reset on the handset (made no difference), and after a couple of hours trying to work it out said that "they couldn't help as it wasn't a Telecom handset).

I've set the APNs as per http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=64219 (SMS and all other services are working fine - just MMS that is proving frustrating).

Has anyone else managed to get their Nexus 4 doing the MMS thing on XT?

Jono

Good question - i don't actually know if I've ever properly received MMS from someone. I just got download failed when trying to receive one on my own N4. This is on Stock or custom roms.

Though considering how MMS is very costly for the amount of data, thankfully no one i know uses them anymore.

Interesting. I've had a Nexus 4 for about a week on Telecom and not tested this. I get the same as you. I can send OK and I get the notification to view the MMS but no pix never arrives. Will have a deeper look. I normally use WhatsApp for MMS these days..

No luck so far.

I did find this link for the Samsung SGS3 which is the same as my old SGS2. It uses one APN for everything.

http://help.telecom.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/31367

I also found this generic Android 4.x MMS APN setting  on the above link and they appear the same as I have now

Tap More Settings
Tap Mobile Networks
Tap Access Point Names
Tap TelecomMMS
Ensure Proxy is not set
Ensure Port is not set
Ensure Username is not set
Ensure Password is not set
Ensure Server is not set
Ensure APN is set to wap.telecom.co.nz
Ensure MMSC is set to http://lsmmsc.xtra.co.nz
Ensure MMS Proxy is set to 210.55.11.73
Ensure MMS Port is set to 8080
Ensure MCC is set to 530
Ensure MNC is set to 05
Ensure APN Type is set to MMS
Ensure APN Enabled/Disabled is set to APN Enabled
Tap the Home key to return to the home screen

Yeah - I've got the same settings. The telecom shop suggested that they have done some funky things to get MMS to work, which doesn't play nicely with all handsets.

It's not really a big deal, but just annoying that I'll occasionally receive an MMS which then says it can't be downloaded...

They maybe correct or it may be a software issue with the fone. I have an AT&T Eternity that does the same thing on Telecom and Skinny. Outgoing OK but incoming I get a "Retrieving fail, Decoding fail" It works fine on 2D and Voda.

Unfortunately i don't have any other micro SIMs to test on 2D..

Maybe a fix in Android 4.3. Like you it's not a biggy as I use other cheaper ways of doing MMS..

maybe someone from Telecom could confirm or deny this ..

Have you tried another MMS client, such as GoSMS

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms&hl=en

On my Note II I had the same issue for a while, it was fixed with an update, but in the mean time that worked for me.

I used to get "download failed" on my old Nexus One, on Telecom. The solution, if I recall correctly, was to change the authentication type but I don't remember the specifics and no longer own the phone. Take a look at the authentication options though and see whether they're adjustable on the N4.

Thanx Behodar

The authentication options are adjustable but none of the settings have any effect..

Have you ever sent an MMS from that phone? In the dark old days I recall my Sony K700 not being able to receive MMS messages until after I had sent one and the network recognised it as an MMS capable device.

Looks like the interim answer is GoSMS. If prompts you to download and down comes the pix. Not sure if there is a auto download setting..

My Nexus 4 worked no problems, but this was also using Cyanogenmod with the default APN settings that come bundled. If you're using stock then GoSMS is the way to go.

Just had someone send me a MMS from vodafone. Zero notification that it arrived except that mightytext picked up there was an incoming message on my desktop, but couldn't load it. The messaging app didn't recognize it was even there.

CM10.1 latest nightly, default apns, telecom microsim <6months old.

edit: and just as i post this i get "message not downloaded, touch to try again" notification. But tapping it takes me to a new conversation view, not to the conversation with the person who sent it.

I've managed to determine the cause of this problem. It's because the link to an XML file describing the Nexus 4's capabilities (UAProf URL) is broken. The link gets sent to the MMS server whenever the phone tries to retrieve MMS messages. The server checks that XML to determine if it needs to re-encode any of the message attachments. I've logged a bug report: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58101.

The Telecom MMS server doesn't like the broken link. Servers on other networks must just ignore it and return a default. I'm guessing (no packet capture to confirm) that Go SMS Pro sends a different UAProf URL, presumably because it supports more or less attachment formats than the stock app.

I've managed to work around the problem on my phone by making it impersonate the Galaxy Nexus only when connected XT - it probably has the most similar attachment format support to the Nexus 4. To do that I've modified the stock system/app/Mms.apk (get it for stock Android 4.3 at http://vm.matt.gen.nz/Mms.apk). You need to have root access to replace the default because it's a system app. Once replaced, permissions should be set to 644 (same as the default).

If you want to mod it yourself (different ROM or Android version) you need to:
1. Get system/framework/framework-res.apk and system/app/Mms.apk off your phone.
2. Set up apktool with framework-res.apk.
3. Use apktool to extract Mms.apk.
4. I added res/xml-mcc530-mnc05/mms_config.xml to special-case for XT. Modding res/xml/mms_config.xml would change the settings for all networks. You want it to match https://android.googlesource.com/device/samsung/maguro/+/master/overlay/packages/apps/Mms/res/xml/mms_config.xml to impersonate the Galaxy Nexus.
5. Rebuild with apktool.
6. Sign the resulting apk with signapk.
