Just had a jump onto the Telecom website (yeah, I know, it is 1:45am) and are Telecom going to offer the iPhone 5S for open plan and prepaid customers? I wanted to take advantage of the 12/24 months interest free but it appears that Telecom have killed off those plans unless of course they're still in the process of upgrading their website.

Could a friend team member from Telecom set me right on this if I have made a mistake.

Telecom's current iPhone offerings are:
24mo Interest Free on the Open Ultra Mobile plans ($39+)
On 24mo Ultra Mobile plans.

They currently don't have it on Prepaid. So yes, you're able to have it on an Open plan but you're going to need to do it on 24mo interest free.

Just bought a 5S on open plan this morning from Telecom. I'm not too sure how much stock they have, but I didn't have any trouble.

You can not buy the phones outright or buy them upfront through these channels, I thought the stores were operating under the same premise but as above appears you may be able to buy them upfront on a plan

This situation is utter BS, my wife went down to a store to buy her new ip5s outright as she is now off contract but ended up having to lock into a 24mth contract where the subsidy is less than the additional plan costs. Awesome way to upset otherwise happy and good customers (landline, vdsl2, 2x mobiles, 1x3g iPad). I wasn't there and she felt pressured to sign in order to get her new phone she had eagerly been waiting for :(

Please show me a iPhone launch when you have been able to purchase the phones outright from any provider? It's just never happened because all stores have very limited stocks. And why sell an unlocked phone outright that there is effectively no margin on the day it launches?

You can purchase direct from Apple and they should supply within 2-3 weeks, which strangely enough would be the same time that the phones would probably be available to purchase outright from any mobile provider.

Our commitment to Telecom is not in question we have no intention of changing telcos. Obviously some people have been able to buy at full price on open plan however my wife was not able to. Instead she is paying a $10/mth or $240 over the term of the contract premium which nets her a $200 subsidy

I purchased a 3GS outright from Vodafone on launch day and they couriered it to me with same day delivery. NZ was the first country they were released in by a few hours. So it has happened.

And my understanding is by only selling them on 24mth interest free term they almost have a safeguard in place as to take advantage you need to stay on a post plan plan for the duration of the interest free term and if you cancel plan you will need to stump up for the outstanding balance of the phone

Buying on 24mth open plan with interest free is a version of a 24mth contract in a round about way, hence my concern that all Telecom have done is upset existing customers whose loyalty need not be questioned

I would say it has very little to do with any Telco providing outright purchasing on launch date since if they had the stocks it wouldn't be an issue.

The supply issue should not be understated. Hence why there is the preference for on-account customers.

I was there for the Telecom 4 & 4S launch and the stores only had 2 each of the black & white 64GB models for the ones that were open at midnight, but the stocks soon came in about 2 weeks later (due to worldwide demand) and then outright purchasing and prepaid became an option.
