i was just looking around on the telecom website and it says that the samsung w531 can roam on both CDMA and GSM Networks
so in Saying That vodafone nz is a GSM network would you beable to insert a vodafone nz sim card in to this phone and be on both networks?

No... While you can roam on other GSM networks the hanset is locked to O2, which provides the SIM card to Telecom.

Is it possible for this phone to connect to the 111 system using vodaphone if no Telecom service available as would be a great safety feature for those of us who go off the beaten track to work, especially in these OSH aware times.

If not available at present could telecom possibly allow this feature to be turned on.

If you were after a phone for 'safety purposes', a satellite phone would be much more desirable as it would give you near 100% coverage in New Zealand (providing you are outdoors and have line of sight to the sky).

I haven't tested it but would guess that it could make 111 calls without a SIM card on GSM, as many GSM phones have that ability. However as the GSM feature is provided as a roaming feature rather than a back-up network feature. In many cases, coverage is matched or better, particularly when compared to their current 3G network.

Yeah you can, you just need to know a special code. You could probably find it on the net somewhere, I don't know if it would be legl or not though.

It does not seem to even start the GSM radio up unless a "valid" simcard is inserted, if you insert the "roaming simcard" you will be able to make 112 calls on it while "roaming" on Vodafone NZ

If you either switch to GSM or you set the phone to CDMA first, GSM secondary.(112 is the GSM emergency number)

Yup can be used in NZ with a Vodafone SIM card, you just got to enter the "CODE"

How is unlocking the phone to use another network illegal? I can find nothing in the Telecom info and agreement which prevents me from unlocking MY PHONE. The phone is not locked into term contract, I should be able to use it on any network I choose.
